They are not paying income tax on all or most of their income They are not paying market rent for a bed in the floor in a room with others. They are not out shopping, they are remitting half or more of their black market job money. They have a hard time finding work in this area because there are so many of them all trying to get the same unskilled jobs with a translator sub-contractor. |
You keep saying this is about illegals, as if that were the case except all involved were US citizens, the code enforcement officials would be descending on them like a SWAT team. Nobody believes you. |
That all depends. Who would willingly rent out a house to illegal aliens at submarket rates? That makes zero sense. Many of them use fake social security numbers, which means they have income, social security and unemployment withheld from their paychecks. And "not out shopping?" Dude, do YOU shop? I see them at Costco and everywhere else shopping. And as for "having a hard time finding work" you should take a look at who's working in the kitchen at your favorite restaurant, who cleans the hotel rooms, who's on the construction sites, who does maintenance for your office building and everywhere else. You seem either clueless, oblivious, or willfully ignorant and immune to reality. |
So it’s better that they come here against our country’s laws, take money from American workers, send that money to their country of origin, and then leave at some point? Yay. |
too many and no support from rich folks in town, none. |
You're truly hilarious. The whole reason there's demand for them is because American workers won't take those dirty and dangerous jobs, or think those jobs are beneath them. Follow what's going on in Florida due to the new law passed there. Construction sites and other places are empty because the illegals are leaving. And guess what - no Americans are showing up to replace them. |
A tight labor market would lift wages at the bottom and force employers to pay more. As someone who hires people, I love that I can keep wages low due to immigration. I keep the extra money. |

Make everyone who is currently here legal. It’s just complicating things that people who have lived here for a long time aren’t able to switch to a legal status. Give them a visa. Offer standardized language classes and after 2 years, you have to pass a language test to renew the visa. Offer on the job training. Have mandatory welcome classes explaining the American system.
After one or two years, you have to prove you or your spouse have a legal job. Then enforce this. These people are more willing to work than the drug addicts sitting in West Virginia whining that their coal mine jobs went away. Give them the opportunity to do so legally. |
Wait, what?? No, that’s now how it works at all. And PP is correct. Come by the Home Depot where there are dozens of men standing around looking for work on a daily basis. Leaving trash all over, while they wait. And using the grass as a restroom. |
Yep. And this is why the influx of illegal immigrants will never abate. It benefits wealthy business owners. |
The Koch brothers wet dream |
The school can’t deny kids an education. FWIW, at our school (with a high ESOL rate), I have never been asked for proof of vaccination. They don’t even have an address of record for some of the kids at the school. |
The hypocrisy of the Takoma Park poster is astounding. Sends her kids to a majority White school (not many of those left in MCPS, but she found one of the few) while talking about how the new arrivals make her school ‘stronger’. Then, once the school gets to a tipping point (maybe somewhere over 50% ESOL students), she’ll pull her kids out of public because the school isn’t a ‘good fit’ anymore for her kids. Or because her kid isn’t being challenged enough. I have seen this happen with so many hypocritical progressive families. The ESOL percentage of less than 30 is quite low compared to many schools in MCPS that are dealing with the challenges associated with much higher numbers of new arrivals. Made even more challenging because they are not just Spanish-speakers. Our school has new arrivals from all over the world whose parents don’t speak English. It is super challenging for the teachers and admin to communicate with parents and the cultural differences are wide. |
Slum landlords. They can get off cheap and not keep the place up to code. And they get payment in cash, which they then actually send back to a bank in a different country. The man that does this in our neighborhood owns several homes that he has made into illegal multi-family rentals. He is also from another country. It’s become quite common in some areas and the landlords make a ton of money this way. |
