Are magnets worth it for college admission?

No one has the depth of Math, Science & Comp Sci Blair has. No one. The awards it wins, the NMSF it has, are head & shoulders above everyone else.

My kid took Honors Geometry at TPMS in 8th but found summer factoring camp before Funcitons really helpful

Not that long ago, before MCPS changed the math pathways, TPMS used to have Mag Alg. 2.

No student should choose a magnet program for college admissions. Classes are harder GPAs may be lower than they would be if they attended the local HS. Go to Seneca Valley HS get perfect 5s on your APs and a 1600 SAT and you’ll likely have better college admissions results- if that’s your goal- there are many fewer kids at the school with this profile.

A student should only choose a magnet because they want to attend the school and they think it will enrich them in some way.

It’s what you do rather than where you go that will fundamentally shape your life experiences and how well you do in college.

Don’t get me wrong, there are lots of reasons to choose magnet programs and I’m so grateful my kids have had the opportunities- but college admissions is not the reason they chose the programs. They liked the programs the HS offered but we are under no illusion that “buys” them anything more than a HS experience that they prefer.

I can’t believe so many kids are willing to wake up at 5:30 am to catch the bus- that would be misery for us. To each their own though…

I can see the draw but don't do it for college admission. My student's friend from Seneca Valley did just that, did amazingly well on the AP exams, got the IB diploma, got great SAT scores, and basically got into every school she applied for.

However, no or very little improvement on their college admissions if the students can get same states and EC achievement.

Hard to reconcile this with the actual data that shows Blair has significantly better college admissions than other MCPS schools.

Not for long. Because of the lottery, there aren't enough students these days who attended the wealthy schools where AIM was offered in ES to justify that.

Look at the link posted earlier in this thread for RMIB, or google the college edition of Bethesda Beat.

Here is the list from Bethesda magazine - I just was looking at it and it starts on page 68. It's hard to glean exactly hat is happening though because they don't separate the magnets from the rest of the school. And Blair is the biggest high school in MD so many of the applied and or accepted could be non-magnet kids. I wish they had a nice lost like the RMIB program does.

Also Blair and RMIB are very diverse schools, and home school kids can take magnet classes. So a highperforming URM who appeals to top schools might not necessarily be in the magnet programs, which are ~90% Asian.

If by very diverse you mean similar to the overall makeup of the county, then sure.

I dont know about RMIB, Blair Smac is about 50-60% Asian. Never 90%. I had two kids went through the magnet.

Back in Jan 2020 before the lottery, the TPMS magnet coordinator said there were only a small number of kids on that pathway.

At the admitted students night this year for incoming 9th grade, the attendees were more than 80 percent Asian. Perhaps it will shake out differently with acceptances but it seems likely to be higher than 50-60%.

I basically meant unlike the W schools, yes.
