Meanwhile, the whole time, the right wing media echo chamber gaslights its viewers into asking where Pete is, complaining about Biden and suggesting federal money for this is going to Ukraine. We see those sentiments echoed here.

Enough people. This is the environmental dystopia the GOP wants. This is the "limited federal government" the GOP wants. This is the lifting of "pesking and burdensome regulations" the GOP wants.

DeWine withheld declaring a disaster because 1) he didn't want to depend on the Feds for help and 2) he and the GOP are so deep in the big businesses pocket that they bend over backwards to take the position for big business that the sacfririce the health and well being, property value and life value of their own voters.

And now representative for Norfolk Southern are (besides offering the 25K to the whole town, which I think cannot be real ($5 a person!) so I haven't researched) going house to house and offering to test water and getting residents to sign their rights away. Until they got caught. So far it's just social media (hmm, no reporters in there getting this story?) but I'm hoping there's more tangible stories and evidence soon. I am very scared for these people.

As many have pointed out, they will take even 10K or something and sign their rights away, because they are in straitened circumstances and need to keep on living. I hope there are good lawyers helping them, like we saw with the immigrants on Martha's Vineyard/Nantucket.

If their well water is contaminated what then? They then have to rely on Norfolk Southern to supply water for the rest of their lives? Or likely Norfolk Southern spins that part of their business off as a subsidiary and then declares bankruptcy.
And families won't be able to resell their house? I think $25k plus $10k per house will not even remotely cover the cost of setting up a water utility and distribution piping for the community.

Even the Democratic Senator is saying the residents are right to be skeptical....

Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown said Sunday that people were “right to be skeptical” about their safety following a train-derailment chemical spill and fire — and didn’t answer when asked if he’d be willing to drink the local water.

During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Brown was asked if residents of East Palestine, Ohio, should “accept the assurances from the government” that their air and water were clean following the incident earlier this month.

“Well, they’re right to be skeptical,” he said. “We think the water is safe, but when you return to your home, you should be tested again for your water and your soil and your air, not to mention those that have their own wells.”

When asked by host Pamela Brown if he’d drink the water — and if other officials should do so to reassure the public — the Ohio Democrat didn’t answer directly.

“Well, I think they are,” he said. “I mean, I talked to the mayor. The mayor said definitively, emphatically, that people can drink the water. The mayor’s — I don’t know. I don’t think the mayor has small kids. He looks a little older to me. I didn’t ask him, but — about bathing his kids.”

It was Trump that killed the reform for brakes. If this accident becomes enough for the Congress to pass new legislation, then wonderful However it won't be because Norfolk Southern owns the GOP.

It doesn't appear to be brakes that caused the derailment.....

The cause of a multiple-car train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio has not officially been determined, but a mechanical issue with a rail car axle is suspected to be the cause of the derailment, and the National Transportation Safety Board said it has video appearing to show a wheel bearing overheating just beforehand.
