When you meet other moms and their kids, what signals upper class?

Really, though: I don't understand how or why people genuinely care about and buy into this stuff. You aren't striving for, say, a good life for your family...you're striving for appearances. You're strivers. It's just so...superficial. What is missing, deep down inside, that you're so invested in "signaling upper class"? Is that something you think about? I'm genuinely puzzled.
