Teacher Resident - no teaching qualifications required?

You cannot be considered a certified teacher. You are a certified teacher or you are not.

Passing the subject area praxis should be a minimum requirement for a teacher residency in MS or HS.

OMG, how are you a teacher? They passed the praxis, they are certified teachers. Learn how to comprehend what you are reading!!!

Typical DCUM…

Though I’m hesitant to believe, because all 3 of my kid’s schools aren’t releasing class assignments until next week.

Well I'm hesitant to believe that you have a brain, so there's that. Lots of schools released teacher names today. Just because your school didn't doesn't mean that others don't. We received teacher assignments today. #sorrynotsorry

Thanks for your non-answer though.

You are “hesitant to believe that (someone else has) a brain,” yet you used hashtag sorrynotsorry? Are you 12?

One of the SAHMs was hired as an IA during COVID now has a full-time teaching job at our school through this program. I’ve never been impressed with her, she’s more interested in gossiping about the kids in the neighborhood and their families, but I guess these are desperate times.

That’s what the people crowing about teacher posts being “98% filled” on DCUM don’t understand. These are just woefully incompetent warm bodies. Fine if all you want is a babysitter, I guess. Shrug.

I think teachers are really important in society and should be compensated and respected, but -- is it really something other adults can't do? If someone wants to be a teacher, then that is a gift. Most people don't want to teach. But does that mean they CAN'T teach?

I saw someone from the teacher's union (MCPS? Not sure) say, "Would we let just anyone into the cockpit of a plane or do surgery?" I mean, it's not flying a plane or surgery. It's teaching children, which most people have done in their lives anyway.

Again, I admire teachers. They should be respected and compensated well. But I'm sure others can pick it up and teach kids in the classroom, too. And if they stick it out, then they too deserve to be compensated and respected. It's a job most people don't enjoy, not rocket science.

God, you’re precious.

It listed right next to her name in the school directory. "Teacher Resident"
I googled her. She has a 2021 undergraduate degree in theater. So someone who wanted to be an actress, realized it's impossible, and is now trying to teach without a teaching degree because it was an easy job to get. Can't wait.

So? Remember when you were all piling on teachers during the pandemic, telling them they had to go in "because the kids don't catch it", telling them they should quit if they didn't go in and any warm body would do a better job, and then accusing them of being pedophiles and groomers? How much abuse did you think people would take for 60k a year? They listened to you! You bought it, you own it now. Enjoy!

This. In 2020, at the worst of the pandemic pre vaccine, I exasperatedly asked a hypothetical question about whether these angry parents would rather have an unemployed, totally unqualified mouthbreather who couldn’t cut it as a Target cashier “teach” their kids in person rather than an experienced, qualified teacher virtually and was met with a ridiculous cavalcade of “Yes!!” “100%!!”

Cool. “Enjoy,” indeed.

SB in a race to the bottom.

It's not the SB, there is a national shortage. If anything blame VDOE wgo set requirements. It's bugger than the SB.

There isn’t a shortage of teachers - there is a shortage of people willing to teach for low pay and terrible working conditions.

Most people can barely handle being around their own children for a couple of hours at a time. Very few untrained teachers could handle engaging, teaching, and inspiring a classroom of 25 + students for 7 hours a day, 5 days a week.

People have no idea what it’s like to teach unless they’ve actually taught in a classroom (not just sub, but teach). If the public knew what is expected of teachers they’d realize how underpaid they are.

Either pay teachers more or cut their workload in half. Smaller class sizes/more classroom support, fewer meetings, fewer trainings, fewer “duties” (bus, lunchroom, after school clubs, committees, etc.). Stop expecting teachers to work outside of their contract hours (let them arrive and leave on time).

Well, from most people's POV, virtual school has zero value so it could be the great poet society guy teaching it and honestly? Wouldn't matter. No one is learning especially in ES.
So yes, school with a moron teacher is better then no school at all.

Did you look at the sample subject-area tests? Some of them are extraordinarily difficult.

I have an M.A. in English literature, and have taught English at multiple levels including college-level, yet I found a number of the literature questions on both the middle-level and the high-school-level English subject tests to be rather challenging. Examinees are expected to be familiar with hundreds of pieces of literature, many of which are quite obscure.

There's really nothing funny about a Sophie's Choice between school with an idiot teacher and no school.
