What makes you think she needs a scholarship? This is a girl who went to a $50K/yr private school and currently makes millions of dollars a year from endorsements. She is not hurting for cash, and she's going to "not hurt" for it even less. |
+1. This is more about a certain demographic feeling entitled to dominate and control a young, attractive woman, particularly an Asian one, than anything else. |
The irony is that Gu is viewed as a symbol of dominance and control by China on the global stage. Personally I think anyone should be free to choose their own path. I would not have done it, but she is obviously doing this for her own selfish reasons. |
Never said she needed the money - the money angle never occurred to me as of course she doesn’t need it. This is about principle folks. It’s the prestige of being a U.S. Presidential Scholar that she values and what it would symbolize in being rescinded because of her behavior. Also don’t care that she is Asian, or Chinese-American or super pretty. All these things are great as far as I’m concerned. It’s her representing a country that is not her country of birth and much worse is a country that perpetrates horrors every day. |
If she isn’t a US citizen she isn’t eligible for this scholarship. |
Maybe this statement sounds better in Chinese… |
And New York Times recently argued that Asians are over-presented in figure skating, right before Nathan Chan got the Gold medal. https://deadline.com/2022/02/new-york-times-gets-backlash-for-asian-american-figure-skating-overrepresented-article-1234932425/ |
So she also has no qualms about living in a country that has systemic oppression of multiple ethnic minorities ongoing at all times? |
| Does she pay for facilities she uses and for her coaching staff? If yes, welcome to capitalism baby! |

A Hockey Player, born and raised in Canada, attended Princeton, worked in Wall Street, and now plays in Team China in the Olympics In Beijing. Does any one in the US or Canada have a problem?
“As a child, Kimberly Newell could never have aspired to a professional hockey gig in China. It was an option that did not exist until after she had retired post-graduation from Princeton University, one that the KRS Vanke Rays netminder joked she thought was a “scam” when it was first proposed in 2018. But this twist of fate allowed Newell to fulfill another dream simultaneously, a goal that she had set while studying Chinese in college. After the 2018-19 season, she had the opportunity to travel to her family’s home in Hangzhou, where she had one final conversation with her grandfather. “ |
Yup. Difference is she wouldn’t qualify for US or Canadian hockey team so it was her only choice if she wanted to compete at Olympics. |
Yes, I have no problem with her competing in olympics for china. |
| It looks like on Instagram Gu suggested that anyone can get a VPN for free and access Insta just like she does. Unfortunately in China VPNs are illegal. And her comment has now disappeared from where it was posted on Weibo. It looks like maybe she should have spent more time in China following their laws to avoid this sort of thing. |
Don't talk like the communists. They use patriotism to incite mobs and beat down the individuals. |
The messages to Chloe Kim are terrible! I don't understand the backlash over the NYT article. Why it is offensive to say Asian Americans are over-represented in figure skating if that is indeed a factual statement? It is the same thing as if someone said Black Americans are overrepresented in the NFL or Male Americans are over-represented in technology companies or Elderly Americans are over-represented in the Presidency. How should it be worded appropriately to say that a certain group holds proportion of the group that is more than what is seen in the general population? |
