| The university does need to be more far transparent about violent and property crime incidents both on and just off campus. Why doesn't the college itself provide a map with all of the recent incidents? Because they don't want families seeing how dangerous it really is. |
| ED1 admit, class of 2025- 35 ACT, 3.97 unweighted GPA, club president, national championship level academic extra curricular, 250 service hours. No sports. |
| How much does Chicago care about AP classes and IB diploma? |

ED1 admit, class of 2025. 33 ACT, 3.7x unweighted GPA, from a top school on west coast. Full pay. Athletic but not in school sports.
Started out with 4 rigorous classes and dropped one (her easy one that she was acing) just to have more time to work on her chem class, but still struggling. Trouble understanding the strong accents of both teacher and TA. Waited for (not sure what it is called, but the student helpers, but the line was too long and they are first-come-first-served. She's now got a private tutor. Other than that, and the recent safety issues, that school is amazing. Which I know sounds ridiculous, given the safety issues. But it's a good fit for her. Hope that helps, OP. |
yes hardly anyone gets in EA, but I think a lot of kids do EA and then convert it to ED2---which is great as all the work is done and you just have to submit a parent and school consent form and ED2 is done. My child did this and it worked for ED2 admission. |
Ugh, glad she's able to access private tutoring. |
| While you can’t blame the college for the crime, you don’t need to send your child there until the city straightens things out. And it’s hardly just shootings and homicides — the potential to be a victim, street harassment and property crimes committed against students are a 24/7 concern. It’s not as if UChicago is offering a unique product, there are dozens of peer colleges offering the same experience with none of the environmental fear and potential for permanent trauma and PTSD. |
Because it’s the highest ranked school they get into. Period. |

I just checked College Confidential forums and I couldn’t believe the same boosters are spamming on there from 8 to 10 years ago. Our oldest daughter looked at UofC back in 2013 and I recall some of the same posters and boiler plate comments about how crime is overblown, Hyde Park is so safe, no mention of Woodlawn, no mention of the other terrifying neighborhoods around them.

Wow, what a read. "If [security alerts] go off every time there’s a mugging students might tune them out." RE: "There are THAT many muggings?" "In the Chinese community people’s comment is “the public safety in Chicago is not better than Afghanistan”." "Hyde park is regarded as a safer neighborhood than the others around the campus, but that isn’t saying much at all; you wouldn’t allow a younger teen to walk around by themselves after dark in this “better” area." "As someone born and raised in Chicago I can’t imagine Hyde Park being described as a ‘safer neighborhood’. In my lifetime it’s never been considered safe as far as I’ve been aware." "Until UChicago’s $80,000 COA can stop $0.38 bullets I would tend to agree [it is not worth it]." "The pandemic caused the closure of the University in favor of remote learning. No student or recent graduate died as a result of the pandemic, as far as I know. Two students or recently graduated students have been murdered this school year. Why does the school not go to remote learning until this particular health emergency is abated?" "Having spent a decent amount of time on the South Side and having traveled extensively domestically, I can say Chicago is in a special league. I cannot think of another reputable university in such a dangerous area." "My daughter is a UChicago student and we not only visit often, but we have had to take days off our jobs to go and stay with her when her roommate was not in town, because she’s terrified to be and walk around alone. Hyde Park IS a war zone. Chicago IS a war zone. I have accompanied her multiple times to CVS, Target, grocery store, gym, labs, library, and I must say I have never felt so unsafe in my life." "My brother is a econ Phd and lived in Hyde Park and had an affiliation with the school. He loved the school, but just couldn’t swing the constant need for hyper awareness in Hyde Park." "...the campus location is problematic. If you’re a criminal would you rather mug someone that might also have an illegal firearm, or a soft target like a U of C student? Criminals are opportunistic." "I am a current student. I urge all prospective students to NOT apply to this school. I have loved almost every aspect of my experience here, and if you had asked me in January, I would have enthusiastically encouraged people to apply. Unfortunately, UChicago is NOT safe. After the events of this year, I fear for my life while walking to class. I have been forced to download the Citizen app and follow crime-spotting Twitter accounts to be kept up-to-date on areas to avoid due to armed robberies and shootings because UChicago simply does not tell us. The school is not doing anything substantive to keep its students safe - instead, they are trying to downplay the brutal murders resulting in 3 dead students to make sure that YOU, the prospective students, don’t know the details. (1) We are not alerted to most instances of violent crime. You can see this for yourself when comparing the UCPD daily crime log to the security alert emails we receive. The only reason I knew about Zheng’s murder was through Citizen. The University did not alert us until hours after it happened, and the suspect had not been caught during that time." The booster moderator of the thread then threatened to close the thread and ultimately the forum did lock the thread. See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. |
DD applied EA to UC, which seems like a perfect fit for her
But the security and safety issues are concerning. A friend's child just graduated from UC this spring. Loved every second of it and stayed in Chicago for the summer. Worrisome, yes. But we'll see if DD gets accepted. |
| Seems like a school and area best avoided until the city has new leadership and cleans up the South Side. There are other schools in much safer urban environments. |
| there are quite a few rabid UChicago haters on DCUM - possibly as a response to the unchecked boosterism as PP mentioned on College Confidential |
| Anyone's child receive the Chicago EA or ED results today? Mine was deferred. Had applied EA. |
| DD accepted ED! We’re very surprised. 1510 SAT and full IB student from magnet school. |
