Has the security situation improve in the neighborhoods surrounding the university? Would you be worried to send your daughter or son there?

Still bad. Reports of kids afraid to leave their rooms at night (which comes early since the sun sets at around 4:30).

Congratulations! Mine is also a full IB student but was deferred. Does your student have strong ECs?

Thank you! Pretty normal ECs. I think they pick them out of a hat. Good luck to your DC! I hope good news is coming his or her way very soon!!

They absolutely do not pick out of a hat. Kinda what they are known for. Make sure you attend Dean Nondorf's welcome zoom call in January and you will see what I mean. Welcome to the community. It is truly the most amazing place.

PP here. I’m curious to know more! One thing that stood out to me is how much time DD spent writing her Chicago essays. It went on for weeks but she seemed to love it. The essay was actually funny and, honestly, almost wacky. I basically thought the essays were so “fringe” that she’d never get in. Guess now!

Yes, the essays (can) matter more at UChicago than at other places. They appreciate intellectual playfulness and the prompts are designed to elicit it.

I'm the PP you responded to. If your DD spent that much time on her essays and loved it, she is a great fit for UChicago. Much of first quarter is spent getting to know each other by discussing their essays ("Which one did YOU write?"). It is a hard, hard school academically, but my DC reports that the kids love the school and especially love that they have finally! found their peeps (another thing often said among the new 1st years is how they each "stuck out" a bit in high school but "stick in" at UChicago). The administration is amazing and love their students and their intellectual curiosity in ways that are unknowable unless you actually experience it (I won't go into detail here, it would be lost on the UChicago haters). They do not pick out of a hat. They know who they want and have identified your DD as one of them. Congratulations.

Any chances of getting into Chicago with regular decision for high stats kid?

Our. Hood’s counselor told him that chances of admission decline sharply after ED1. Still some benefit in ED3, but chances are bleak in RD even for the best stats.

Typo! I meant ED2. And our child’s counselor

Was this year easier to get in because of the crime wave? The murder just before ED deadlines maybe caused applications to be withdrawn?

Noting the very real threat of crime around campus is not "hating."

Typical UChicago booster trying to whitewash its safety issues. What else is new?

Frankly, don’t care which colleges you guys bash whether UChicago or any other. Sounds like some of you are a bunch of whiners who need to get a life. Have a good night.

Uh, how is discussing murders and crime rates "whining"?
