Florida has the highest number of alligators in all of the United States of America. In that state your odds of actually being bit by an alligator are 1 in 24,000,000. In that same state your odds of winning the lottery are actually 1 in 23,000,000. So if you are fearful of alligators I advise you to go by a lottery ticket, because your chances of winning the lottery are better than your chances of being mauled by an alligator! You have more of a chance in the southeast of having any of the following happen around you, than you do of being attacked by the local predator:

Car accident
Dog Attack
Cat attack
Plane Crash
Lightening Strike
Drowning
Winning the Lottery
Tornado
Choking on McDonalds
Being swarmed by Mosquitoes
So the next time you hear an alligator story on the news, just remember the media doesn't report every single thing to you!

Snakes come up pretty often on Intercot and the Dis boards. Last year a kid ended up hospitalized because he was playing with a venomous snake at his Disney resort and it bit him.

Alligators don't really come up too often. There's never been an attack and Disney has been very reassuring to guests that they remove alligators when they find them.

But they don't remove them. And there was an attack in the 80s. Reports coming out now of recent alligator sightings on property and Disney didn't do anything.

I feel like people have tried to make this point but it has been more implied than explicitly stated.

If Disney was able to wave a magic wand today that eliminated every alligator from their property there would still be alligators there tomorrow. Disney is actually incapable of micromanaging nature, despite their ability to micromanage virtually everything else.

But it's a man-made lagoon and beach. So they created it, thereby inviting the danger. They can't argue, "hey, we can't control nature" when they created the habitat for the gator to live in.

In Florida you cannot control where the gators go - man made or natural lake... They are notoriously territorial and will invade manmade spaces. It would be like trying to remove all of our squirrels from forests or new home builds... Aint gonna happen.

And that's why it's a bad idea to build an artificial lake next to a tourist resort and then invite tourist to play on the beach at dusk.

Actually, the lakes serve a purpose. They're used for overflow water. Remember that most of Florida is swamp land that got drained - well guess what? If it weren't for these lakes, Florida would be a swamp again.

But gators themselves have no natural predator - so their own population is out of control. That's the issue. They should be culled way way down at least.

What are humans?

Law abiding humans are prohibited from hunting alligators under the ESA (except during a very limited state "harvesting" program).

Disney has a permit from the State of Florida to kill nuisance alligators on its property at any time.

As that article says, an alligator can't be declared a nuisance until it is 4 ft long.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2016/06/30/disney-world-is-erasing-evidence-of-alligators-crocodiles-after-toddlers-death/

Disney has wiped out references and depictions of alligators and crocodiles from its storied attractions at the Magic Kingdom in Florida in the weeks after a 2-year-old was killed in an attack at a resort, according to reports.

The Miami Herald reported that cartoon alligators and crocodiles have been removed from shows and parades, and a popular one-liner warning parents to watch their children or “the crocodiles will” is no longer told on the Jungle Cruise ride at the Magic Kingdom.

Walt Disney World Resort Vice President Jacquee Wahler confirmed to The Washington Post on Thursday that the company “made changes out of respect for the family.”

“We did this two weeks ago immediately following the incident,” she said via email.

Going to make the Peter Pan exhibits tough.

When they say you're more likely to "win the lottery," that's not all that comforting. I can go buy five or six scratch-offs right now and have a very good chance, probably better than half, of "winning the lottery."
