Little Gert is named for your Great Aunt Gertrude. She (Aunt Gertrude) took you to Paris when you graduated high school and you've inherited done great Art Deco jewelry from her, which of course will one day go to Gert. Sometimes you wonder if Aunt Gertrude's life may have been a bit more complicated than you realized as a kid. How, for example, did "a spinster" (your Grandma's word) and "some kind of legal secretary" (your mom's) afford that fab apartment on Lake Michigan and aforementioned jewelry? At any rate, you had Gert picked out as a name for a little girl since college At Northwestern. Majoring in Art History seems, in retrospect, like the decision of a person you don't even recognize-who was that dumb 19 year old and wtf did she think she was going to do for a living?!? After a couple of years waiting tables you finally got your foot in door with an HR position and ended up meeting your husband the first week when he had an issue with his dental plan, though it would be years (and only after much HR policy consulting) till you began dating. If Gert eventually has siblings you have chosen Madge and Clive, though your husband is under the impression he will pick th the next one. |

You live in Virginia and work as a government contractor in DC. You met your husband while an undergrad at GW, and he was getting his MBA. Both of you are terrified of crime, and happy you live in Virginia. You are a lifelong republican, but mostly because both of your parents were republicans. You don't think about that stuff much. You get along well with your inlaws, but were really angry when your MIL asked you what Jack was short for. Jack is his legal name, it had never occurred to you that it was a nickname. Thankfully no one had any problems with Clara's name. You wanted a name that was easy to spell, sounded pretty, and it just so happened to be the name of your aunt who died when you were 5.
