Most NATO soldiers weren't even alive then. The world has changed a ton since, NATO is learning that the hard way.

One big takeaway from this conflict is that propaganda is a weapon. And like with any weapon, if you're not careful with it, you will get friendly fire. Ukraine is so saturated with propaganda that decision makers from the squad level on up do not have accurate information. This has led them to make disastrous decision after disastrous decision in their battle with the truth.

Some of the biggest follies that led to this state:
Invincibility of NATO equipment
Russia is out of ammo and demoralized
Russia is on the verge of civil war
10-1 kill ratios
Russia's economy is about to collapse

NATO/Ukraine ignored one of the oldest maxims in war: “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

NATO/Ukraine now takes pride in neither knowing itself nor its enemy.

More troll activity than usual, jumping on the counteroffensive and trying to shape public opinion.

NATO will not pull its support if Ukraine struggles during its counteroffense, given that all the rational people EXPECTED this counteroffensive to be inching, not striding along.

It's the media who is disappointed. Not being in the loop, they expected lightning gains, even though they've observed for months that Russians have built large fortification systems, and mined huge swathes of land. They don't have much to report on. They're frustrated. Pro-Russian trolls want to build on that to shape the message that Ukraine is losing, when it's not.

Of course the counteroffensive is very intense and difficult. This is why it took so long to prepare. This is why Biden finally authorized the release of US-built fighter jets to Ukraine.

NATO and Ukraine will prevail eventually, but it won't be before 2024, at the earliest.

I don't think anyone (other than some naïve posters on Reddit) subscribed to the assumptions you list. At every point both Ukraine and NATO have stated that the counter-offensive would be hard fought, and victory was not assured.

That said, the UAF counter offensive doesn't seem to have much progress in its first days. I don't know if that's a harbinger of trouble ahead, or just to be expected as the armored brigades push through the first lines of defense. However, this is a war that rewards defense and punishes offense. I wonder if Ukraine would have been better off to stockpile the NATO weapons for defensive use, and plan to bleed Russia dry for the next several years, even if that meant living with the current occupation in the east.

Ukraine has been radio silent for a few days so all we see is Russian propaganda. What is clear though is that this will be a horrible slog. There's a very good reason why the US prioritizes air superiority. Tank and infantry battles over mined open fields is grim. 16 months ago all those guys were living their lives. A lot of them are going to die.

Those assumptions are all in this thread by sincere posters. Anyone disagreeing with those assumptions got called a Russian shill/bot/trollsky.

Keep in mind that many people on this forum consider themselves better informed than the general public and have influential positions.

I prefer a longer war, but for it to move more to Russian soil so more Russians are impacted and their costs/destruction of Russian infrastructure goes up.
I think a 5 -7 year event would be just fine.

Its simple. Make a list of all the things you consider problems, from the local to the national. Mark an "R" next to every one you think Russia is causing. Do this with a few other groups for comparison sake.

Then wonder why so many people in high places are so eager to kill Russians/break up the nation/destroy their economy and spend unlimited money to do so. Contrast this with the complete lack of effort and resources to solve actual problems. Makes you think doesn't it?
