Was I out of line at the grocery store with a shrieking toddler?

I’m on your team OP. We need more people to step in when public behavior is unacceptable. I welcome it for my kids too. They need to know that their behavior affects everyone and it raises their situational awareness.

Yes they are and they are psycho.

Took my kid to the store with me all the time when he was a toddler. Never ONCE let him shriek. It's possible.

Good for you, you raised a lemming.

He is 17 now, doing really well. His teachers routinely tell me what a joy he is to have in class. It's the natural consequence of parenting well.

Oh, and he is on the spectrum. Go figure.

Sounds like a lemming.

Bless your heart. I bet people correct your brats in public all the time because you refuse to parent them.

Oh sweet summer child. I don’t have to identify with the poor woman in the grocery store to realize that you’re a psychopath.

Autism ism and caused by Tylenol it’s caused by heredity.

hahahahaha the sweet summer child poster is back. You really love that one, don't you? Really highlights the lack of education and upbringing you suffered. And nbow you're passing it on to your offspring. This is why we need people like OP. She is doing people like you a favor by raising your children since you won't.

You could’ve used a diagnosis and some social skills classes.

Results speak for themselves. No one ever had to correct my child, because I taught him how to act in public. You should try it.

I’m not talking about your parenting. I’m talking about your mother’s parenting. she clearly missed the mark

no thats you you pig

I just love how crazier and crazier you get every single post. Keep showing your stripes.

That was a different poster.

I wouldn't have handled it that way but don't think you were in the wrong. I would just have thought "Oh hell naw!" and walked right out without shopping and come back another time.

You don’t seem to have manners. You’re calling people names. You have no empathy or compassion for others.

I get it. You’re on the spectrum so you don’t really understand these concepts.

Thank you for your public service, OP.

You were not cruel or mean, you simply said what the mother should have said.

hahahaha says a person who started interacting with me by telling me I raised a lemming and by calling me a "sweet summer child." A person who throws a medical diagnosis as a cheap insult. But sure, tell me again about MY manners.

Parent your child so I dont have to. It's that simple.

I love how posters are accepting the OPs description of the events as facts and that the mother never tried to get her to stop or asked her and was apparently telling her to scream louder if the OP is to be believed.
Honestly, so many people on this forum are so mad at everything else going on in the world and all the things that are out of control that they feel vindicated and walk around with moral absolutism about telling toddlers to behave in public but a majority of these posters would back away or ignore rude, impertinent, loud, etc behavior from their parents, siblings, husbands/wives, etc. I am constantly reminded about the fact that most adults expect better behavior from children compared to other adults.

Do adults normally shriek and scream in public? And if so, are they just left alone to do it? Such a weird thing to say.

Anonymous wrote:Yesterday late afternoon I went to the grocery store and almost immediately heard a child letting out loud, ear-piercing shrieks, the kind that reverberate through the aisles and make people wince. Every time it happened, I noticed other shoppers grimacing or exchanging uncomfortable looks.

This went on throughout my trip. Eventually, I ended up in the same aisle as the child, a little girl, maybe 2 or 2.5 years old, and her mom. What surprised me most was that the mom was laughing and clearly encouraging the shrieking, not trying to redirect or stop it. I was frustrated, not just by the noise, but by what felt like a complete disregard for others in the store. I walked up to their cart, looked at the child, covered my ears, and said “Ouch! Your shouting is really hurting my ears!” The little girl immediately burst into tears. The mom called me an expletive and told me I was rude. For the record, the shrieking stopped after that.

I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. I didn’t yell or scold, I tried to speak calmly but honestly. Still, I’m wondering, was I out of line? Should I have just ignored it? How do others handle this kind of situation?

Just curious, was the mom a visible minority ?
