I played for a top D3 team, graduating 10 years ago. Five of my former teammates are either D3 head or D1 assistants coaches, so I think I can speak relatively informatively on this issue.
No, do not waste your money on highlight films. Coaches want to see the complete package. Being a lacrosse player who can compete at the college level has much more to do with how you are able to fit in athletically then your ability to score a few highlight worthy goals against suspect competition. 99% of recruiting is done during summer camps and tournaments (A industry that has gotten completely out of hand in the last decade, but that's another post). If you have a few schools in mind that you are interested in. Email the assistant coaches (They do a majority of the heavy lifting in regards to recruiting). Tell them your grade, your school and what tournaments / camps you will be at in the summer. If they want to see game film on you they will ask for it, and most likely they will want to see a whole game, not just highlights. Also, when it comes to D3 keep in mind most of the teams in the top 10 will recruit 20+ freshmen each year. Since there are no commitments or scholarships involved they have to keep a fresh supply of players coming through. Just because a coach says they would love to have you come to their school isn't a guarantee of playing time, or making the teams for that matter. Keep that in mind when picking a school. |
Uplax used to be a destination tournament for top teams. It was abysmal last year. Judging from the list of clubs attending, there's only a few decent ones this year. Same for Towson. The two will get the same # of coaches. One 20 something assistant at each or one 20 something assistant splitting time between the two which are a little over an hour's drive apart. If you really want to get some entertainment value, check out how many coaches sign in, then sorta watch for one 20 minute half while talking to some other assistant coach friends from their college or MLL teams, then leave. There will be a lot of coaches "at Terp Uplax" or "at Towson" to that extent. Helps the tournament guys look good to show a list later, and gets them the tournament registration lists emails to invite all the kids to prospect days coming up.
Compare some notes with other parents next week. Let me make a bold prediction: your son is about to get invited to a prospect day at UMD, Villanova, Georgetown and High Point next week. The other 24 kids on your son's team will as well. Hey, why not let this be a little fun and let your kid enjoy a weekend of lacrosse. Chances are no coach is there to see him anyways. That's the way this this club business works. |
What's your take on prospect days at specific colleges? |
What's your take on prospect days at specific colleges? Honestly? They are a way for college coaches to supplement their income. Most coach's double their yearly salary through camps, prospect days, hosted tournaments. If your kid is dead set on playing ball in college all the camps and tournaments are a necessary evil. The reality is that the sheer amount of tournaments and "recruiting events" out there make it hard of coaches to narrow down their field of recruits. It's much easier on them to first see if a kid has interest in their school vs cold calling every player they have ranked as a eight or higher based on 20 minutes of a summer showcase game. The guys doing most of the heavy lifting in recruiting are the assistant coaches and grad assistants, these guys are in their early 20's and not paid much. Make their life eaiser, let the know you are interested in them. I loved playing college lacrosse, it was a very special thing to be a part of and I am still deeply connected to the team today. However the whole "industry" that has been built up around getting recruited in the last decade has truly made me feel sorry for the kids going through it now. Make sure your kid likes the school and could seem themselves going there even if they weren't on the team. That's rule number one. |
Superb post. Thank you. |
Am I the only one who believes the gods hate November lacrosse? I can't remember in recent years a single good fall weather weekend for these November weekends after good weather during the weekdays. |
You are not the only one, bro. Froze our butts off last year. So moist and gray is welcome. Are you in Pasadena? |
Towson. Fugly stuff on the grass fields. This is a joke. |
At these prices, aren't there places with enough turf fields to do it right? |
Howard county |
Playing tomorrow. Think the fields would have recovered? |
Vic v black wolf at terp classic today? What wAs score? |
6-3 (or maybe 7-4?) VLC. Hard fought, physical game. |
Why is it impossible for the top DMV AND MD local clubs to be at the same tournament? Crabs, BW, FCA, VLC, Madlax, then fill out with API, Annapolis Hawks, 3D, and ... That would be a good sized tournament all with teams within a one hour drive of each other. The top clubs in LI are frequently doing less formal regional or national tournaments in addition to ones down here. It should be an easy thing to do, and a more convenient and cheaper way to assemble a higher level tournament than the watered down 2 or 3 ones going on 50 miles apart. |
