Wetting the bed as an adult

Anonymous
About a month ago, I was having a particularly busy and vivid set of dreams, and I woke up while wetting my bed.

I am 33 years old and that had never happened to me before, so while I was bothered, I chalked it up to being a random event.

Fast forward to tonight and it happened again! Ugh. Why would this be happening? Has anyone had a similar experience? I'm afraid it's going to continue.

I did this the first time I smoked pot (was a young adult)... could you be on any meds or have recently had surgery?
Anonymous
Definitely not normal. See your MD. PP is right about drugs, legal or otherwise, but you should have this checked out.

You need a nighttime EEG. Possibility of seizures.

Agreed, you need to check for medical issues.

OP here. I have never had any surgery and am not on any medications. I almost always get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, and last night I did have more water than usual right before bed. I guess that is irrelevant though.

I did, of course, just cancel my health insurance two days ago due to an enormous increase in my premiums that coincided with an even more enormous decrease in my salary. Ugh.

Thanks for the advice. For any of you who have experienced this, what was the outcome?

This may be nothing but it should be a big wake-up call about the dangers of going without medical insurance. You never know when something is going to come up. Get new insurance and then see a doctor. If nothing else, it will give you piece of mind.

Typically it could be diabetes, a UTI, obstructive sleep apnea, acute anxiety, or neurological problem, or even bladder cancer.

Having to pee frequently in the night might point to diabetes. The vivid dreaming might suggest apnea. The financial pressures might suggest anxiety.

Take a look here for some advice on what to do (e.g. taking a note of everything relevant):

OP here. You are right, but it is simply not an option right now. I really struggled with the decision and there is no way around it. I have an individual policy along with pre-existing conditions (namely asthma). Therefore, when my current policy's rates were hiked up, my ability to find a more affordable policy was severely limited. Denied, denied, denied.

A friend of a friend did this - he was diabetic and I think the bed wetting coincided with times his blood sugar was not under control.

I did it twice when I had a UTI. Usually I have had symptoms and knew I had a UTI but those two times there were no symptoms.

Go to an urgent care or minute clinic. Typically the co pay is around $25-50 to be seen. At least they could run a urinalysis (urine dipstick) and culture on your urine to see if you have an infection. That test can also pick up abnormally high glucose in the urine (which can point to diabetes).

Call your primary care and negotiate most have sliding scale policies and payment plans.

I'm with the others on the diabetes.

Call me crazy, but since you cancelled your insurance, have a preexisting condition and didn't move to another plan, aren't you screwed? You won't be able to get insurance now -- am I wrong?

I'm 41 and this has happened to me twice as an adult. It happened to me when I had anxiety about a particular situation (moving to a new city-age 23) and once after I got separated-age 28 (we eventually divorced). I've been remarried and had a child and it hasnt happened again in 13 years (watch I'll wet the bed tonight).
