Did anyone hear about the homecoming fight at the Anacostia homecoming game last weekend? People were talking about it at my school but I have not seen anything in the press. Apparently Anacostia and McKinley students and spectators were fighting on the field and no one could stop it.
I also heard that the college fair was canceled last week because students from Anacostia were fighting kids from Ballou. |
| This is just another incident to the long list of fights that have occured at DCIAA football games this year. Why Eastern had to cancel their homecoming activities because of outrageous student behavior. As for the College Fair, the rumors are abound on actually transpired, my students are saying that it was the students from Friendship that were the trouble makers. |
| So what do you do to prevent or avoid this type of behavior? This is one of the main reasons so many middle class families leave DC. |
| Preventing will not be successful, if we don't prepare them for the activity. We prepare students to take a test but to properly prepare them to behave in a sport setting; is pretty much do as the Roman's do. I am firm believer that this "school pride" attitude has morphed into a danger zone. Again, the adult behaviour is fueling many of these outbursts at the games and outings. Case in point when queried about the fracas at the College Fair half the attendees did not know that something happened. Also, it is own record that the Convention Center organizers over re-acted. The underlying problem to the whole issue was that there was not enough security detail to handle such a large crowd; therefore to save money on one end it did the children such a disservice in trying to enjoy the college fair. |
| A fight? In Anacostia? And we're acting surprised? |
| Growing up in Oakland, huge crowd fights at public high school football games were a common occurrence. |
Good grief. We don't prepare students not to engage in public brawling? It's the fault of the college fair organizers that a bunch of kids fought because they didn't prevent it? You have lost your damn mind, lady. I've got news for you - by the time a kid is in high school, much less old enough to attend a college fair, he or she knows that assault is illegal and not permitted in society. The argument that they aren't responsible because no one prevented them from fighting is complete bullshit. |

Sweetie, what is your problem? You are about to blow a gasket honey. Calm the freak down. You're probably the parent who is taising little trouble-makers. I betcha your Wii game night ends in turmoil with everyone off to their rooms YELLING. Crowd control at any event can go horribly wrong when not handled correctly e.g. University of Maryland. Which is factoid number one to show that bad spectatorship was perpetuated. The poster has forgotten to reveal this fact that the homecoming brawl began with the athletes and coaches. By the way Anacostia has increased in school enrollment I am sensing their reputation has not proceeded them.
Hopefully, this evening's friday night lights is event free considering there are homecoming games at Roosevelt, Ballou and Dunbar. The biggest game tonight will between Woodson and Friendship |
I guess that rock wasn't as heavy as we thought. Note to blog - we must find a heavier one so that you'll be unable to crawl from up under it! |

First, do some surveilance to determine who are the most egregarious offenders at your school. Especially parents of prominant status. Then get camera crew, meet them at their out of state car by the school, and point blank ask them what they are doing and why they think they can get away with this. Post the video on youtube and publicize it.
If someone does this I guarantee it will give a LOT of people pause before re-registering their out of district kids next spring. |
| I was at the college fair when the fight happened, and t was Friendship, though I repeat what another poster said that people overreacted, a couple punches were thrown, but no lasting damage. |
|
I am telling you Friendship is not what their name infers. Those students have an aggresive attitude and with the majority being from PG County they are teflon bullies. That meaning they will not be expelled because their strength in numbers; as it will show that the charter school movement is "supposedly" thriving.
Also with Friendship managing Anacostia and with them having an increase enrollment; it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out shady enrollment dealings are happening right under DCPS nose. The idea of posting the video on you tube makes sense. |
| Growing up in Pennsylvania, it was very eye opening for me in public junior high to see older kids in fist fights. We'd gather around and watch. |
|
That is old folklore with this generation. If you share any school yard fight memory with this generation and you'll have to explain to the young brood why you just didn't kill the person.
