VYS Soccer - better or worse?

He’s a late 2011 bday so has to play “up” for travel vs. house. May consider just playing up for house to give us real perspective or may give GFR this week a go though think I will have to say it’s for practice rather than risk having to have another soul crushing convo two weeks in a row.

If GFR doesn’t work out would look at PAC. After a year or two of PAC your son will be able to play for any of these clubs.

I see it like this...if a kid did not make a low level travel team, it's because he doesn't have the work ethic or desire to improve. Maybe this is a blessing and saving you money. If your son finds a wall and kicks the ball off the wall, working on his touch and passing with both feet a few times a week, works on footskills a few times a week, shooting on dad, etc. he would have made travel. If he's not doing these things, what do you expect. You can't just "want" to play travel soccer....although just being athletic at least gets you on a low level travel team.

I’ve heard multiple stories of kids getting dropped from Vienna teams after the recent tryouts. In all cases, it was kids who had been at VYS for years and were mid-level players on Black. Seems like an effort by VYS to improve, but at the cost of loyalty. Seems to me that Vienna was always a place where a kid could come back if he/she wanted to, but that has changed. I understand being a little more cutthroat for the top teams, but not sure I get it for lower level team.

The better players leave by U13 for better competition anyways so no loyalty there either.

Which teams will have the most turnover going into the new season?

Not sure about girls. U13 boys were going to some other tryouts of other clubs but don't know who is leaving. The boys rising U12 top team lost a great kid to another club and not sure why. He was the last one we thought would leave because he's well known in the community. But, there's a couple kids lined up to fill the spot. In the end, everyone is replaceable. It's kids soccer.

Black is the second team for VYS -- I think most age groups have teams below that (White and/or Silver), so hopefully these players weren't "dropped" from Vienna teams altogether, just moved down a level. Perhaps disappointing, nonetheless, but really this is often a chance for players to improve on a more level playing field with other kids of similar skill, and I've definitely seen players at VYS move up to higher teams, too.

I think that movement up/down across teams is going to be required in order for VYS to remain competitive. Put differently, think about the players on Silver or White whose improvement shows that they are ready to move up to Black ... wouldn't it be unfair to deny them that opportunity out of "loyalty" to keeping the rosters unchanged? I think there are no bad intentions in the process, but of course, it's an art as much as a science to sort kids into the proper team level across 3 or 4 teams.

I hope you kids continue to play and to have fun with soccer.

Think the kid you're talking about was recruited onto another club's ECNL team. That happens around U12, 13 - especially with the boys.

PAC practices at Luther Jackson Middle School and falls Church high School and will take most players coming in who are interested at younger ages.

Which club is he going to? And when you say “rising U12”, do you mean current U12 2009?

He's coming to our club - BRYC. I think he's just 11, a little kid. But he has done so well that they are putting him with the U13 ECNL group. The top U12 team for BRYC usually plays U13 so mixture of U12, U13 for next year. BRYC is putting together some great teams.

Congrats to him. I am sure BRYC will reap benefits from the SYC McLean misfire as well.
