Anyone work a retail job for the discount?

I was thinking of working a retail job (Pottery Barn, Ann Taylor, etc.) for the discount. I wondered if anyone has worked in any retail jobs that offer amazing discounts?

My cousin did this during the holiday season so she could buy new clothes for herself (she had lost a ton of weight) and also to buy Xmas gifts for her kids.

Nah. It's easier just to work full time in my chosen profession and buy anything I want with my income.

When I was in my 20's, yes. Worked at Talbots back in the heyday and got a 40% discount. Brooks Bros also used to do 40%.

I worked at retail for 10 years and never ever found a store worth the discount.

The Container Store! They pay really well, treat their employees great and have a 40% discount on everything except Elfa. That's because they have a 50% discount on Elfa!

Couldn't you get a better paying job and simply pay full price? Do you buy so much stuff from that store that it's worth it? I could understand a teenager or college student doing this, but an adult? Not so much.

I would love to find a full time job in my field but I have been job searching with no luck for over 5 months (since graduating with my master's) despite applying to lots of jobs and doing tons of networking. I am now looking for volunteer positions in my field to keep my skills up because I cannot find a paying, full-time or part-time job and I don't want my skills to get rusty, but in addition to that, it would just be nice to get out of the house and work for pay. So I figured, why not get a part-time job at a retail store, while continuing to search for full-time employment in my field.

OK, then that makes sense. Try and find a store that promotes from within. You just might have a future in retail!!

Really? Is that true? A few years ago I worked a few days a week at a retail store and got the discount. I didn't think you needed to be FT.

not true in my experience

Maybe it's changed or it depends on the type of store. My friend worked at Macy's until a few months ago and they droped her discount when she went PT.

I think, it's a great idea. It gets you out of the house and you earn a few $$ and hopefully get a store discount. You might also try temping. This may open up some doors for you. What is your field?
