What is your scent?

Looking for a new perfume...like clean, crisp, maybe fruity smells......anyone like clean the brand, need to go smell some but help me narrow down choices. Thanks.

I wear sandalwood oil from the body shop. Subtle, earthy, and not grossly fruity and sweet.

I wear Coco Mademoiselle by Chanel.

I have an idea that may really help you out. Tomorrow, go to the mall. Take a peek at Sephora, maybe Macys. Perhaps Nordies. At these retail establishments you can test the perfumes, these "scents", as you call them.

You can *smell* them, with your very own nose. Get a sense of what they are all about and whether or not you like them. The neat thing about these retail establishments, the experiences sales staff will not only know which "scents" have the desired smells you enjoy (fruity, crisp, clean), the sales reps will also know which scents are new.

It will save you so much times posting and asking people this information and it will get you to the source of what you need.

You can doooooooo it!

I love perfume. Unlike 22:57 I find most mall sales people to be useless and often pushing whatever the latest promotion is.

I think you are smart to do some research first, that way you can go in and get some samples to take home without spending tons of time testing out scents and burning your nostrils.

You really need to wear a scent all day and night to see how it wears on you. Most stores, and def. Nordstrom's, will make samples of any perfume they have for you to take home.

Now, as for clean, crisp and fruity . . . hmm.

For mall perfumes, try Laila by Geir Ness, J Lo Glow (don't laugh til you smell it!), Calyx by Prescriptives and Donna Karan's Be Delicious.

For higher end stuff that may or may not be pricier but will be harder to find, tryenhaligon's Ellenesia or Bluebell, or Mure et Musc by L'Artisan perfumier or Jo Malone's Nectarine Blossom and Honey. Bloomingdale's definitely carries Jo Malone.

I recommend the website Lucky Scent.

They have a whole section called "Floral Fruity" filled with more unusual and artisanal perfumes you won't find at Sephora etc. You can order samples for most of them.

Have fun!

You really have to go for the established brands. Perfume is one of the rare industries where price and quality are actually related. Higher-end scents will stay on you and stay stable longer. Your popstar perfumes either fade quickly (not enough of the essential oil) or will go wonky after the first hour.

I'm partial to Givenchy and Chanel, again, for stability.

Poster is right to get suggestions. You can't smell all of them in a day, even in your preferred category. Your nose habituates to scent components and that means your nose is only reliable for so many tests. It's best to narrow the list and -- shocker, pp -- recommendations are one way to do that.

23:34 They may have read the marketing on the various perfumes, or not, and they may be able to tell you what is popular etc. but in no way does that compare with people who are, frankly, obsessed with perfumes like the folks at Luck Scent. There is a whole world of people who follow the new releases of perfumes avidly and describe opening notes etc the way some people go on about wine.

This is an example of the kind of perfume-obsession I am talking about:

Last time I went into Sephora I was ready to depend some money and walked out empty-handed. The sales people were worthless.

*spend* not depend. Sheesh.
