I thought we should have opened in fall and then DL over holiday through winter surge. And then I was okay waiting until teachers were vaccinated. All APS staff has had a chance to be vaccinated and kids need more than 2 days of school. APS isn’t even giving our kids a full day of school when they are in the building! I’ll be voting for Miranda just to see someone challenge Duran and our do-nothing school board. I joined APE recently and they are generally reasonable other than a few RWNJs. We do need a school board member that out students first. This is not the election for the PTA mom that is in the bag for the teachers union.

The timing for vaccines, surge, reopening, etc. is unfortunate. I don't think we should rearrange class assignments at this point in the year, which would be required to get more kids back in the buildings -- that is if there is even space for them.

Next pandemic we will have to time it all better.

It's a reasonable approach that many school systems have also used. Back in Jan/Feb there were still 1/3rd school systems in the US that were 100% virtual. We aren't some outlier here.

Back when Duran worked out his RTS plan there were still 1/3rd of the school districts that were 100% virtual. Many in densely-populated, overcapacity areas.

It was a reasonable, prudent decision at the time. Now kids are back in the classroom he's working on getting more kids back if possible. And all kids will be back by the fall.

I agree we should have closed bars & restaurants over schools. But we didn't.

yeah, ok. Seniors unfortunately had their big year taken from them. They'll survive. I don't know what you mean by "last on the list" but whatever. If the seniors harbor resentment about their screwed-up final year for the rest of their lives, it's because the parents are making it out to be such an utterly traumatic situation that can never be overcome. It sucks for everyone. People need to get over themselves believing it's been hardest for them or their kid.

I don’t know much about the school board candidates, and I’m not a member of APE, so I can’t comment on who is “crazy” and who isn’t. But I agree that the decision to keep kids out of schools for a full year will definitely be one we regret when we look back on this time.

That and the decision to hire Duran. Both Duran and Loft have done nothing but damage to our kids for the past year. An entire quarter with zero instruction, no plan to try to get the kids back in school full-time. Duran doesn't even know the status of waitlists for kids that want to switch to hybrid. One survery done back in the fall without any updates, etc etc.. They are AWFUL and have been so lazy throughout all of this. So much easier to just keep it as is and strip kids of their learning. We should file a class action lawsuit.

Perhaps you should apply for one of their positions, or offer them your services as an expert consultant.

My favorite part of your comment is that there are crazy "consultants" on both sides of the open school debate, APE and SMART or whatever. Who are experts in whatever you need: ventilation, survey research, adolescent psychology, epidemiology, statistics, data presentation...

YES! There IS something that can be done — vote for Miranda Turner in the caucus in May. She is running for the open seat on the school board. She has been advocating for our kids since the start. She’s smart, reasonable (not one of the crazy open school people) — she understands all the issues facing APS and most importantly - she puts the STUDENTS first. Not at all. The open schools people are going to be born out to be not crazy. (OK, some of them are. ) But the ones who want schools open with ventilation and masks (like Miranda) are right. We've done huge damage to our kids by staying closed so long. She's got my vote.

I don’t know much about the school board candidates, and I’m not a member of APE, so I can’t comment on who is “crazy” and who isn’t. But I agree that the decision to keep kids out of schools for a full year will definitely be one we regret when we look back on this time.

That and the decision to hire Duran. Both Duran and Loft have done nothing but damage to our kids for the past year. An entire quarter with zero instruction, no plan to try to get the kids back in school full-time. Duran doesn't even know the status of waitlists for kids that want to switch to hybrid. One survery done back in the fall without any updates, etc etc.. They are AWFUL and have been so lazy throughout all of this. So much easier to just keep it as is and strip kids of their learning. We should file a class action lawsuit.

Perhaps you should apply for one of their positions, or offer them your services as an expert consultant.

My favorite part of your comment is that there are crazy "consultants" on both sides of the open school debate, APE and SMART or whatever. Who are experts in whatever you need: ventilation, survey research, adolescent psychology, epidemiology, statistics, data presentation...

People screaming about their seniors are really grinding on my nerves. They are the people who feel like “senior year was the best year EVER”. the whole world is losing out in the last year. Your high schooler will go on to have a happy productive life if you stop getting in their way. I had a fun senior year but it hasn’t defined my life and it isn’t something I think about pretty much ever.
