What can be done about this? I am furious. Is anyone advocating? Are any of these idiots running for reelection? Any recalls?
YES! There IS something that can be done — vote for Miranda Turner in the caucus in May. She is running for the open seat on the school board. She has been advocating for our kids since the start. She’s smart, reasonable (not one of the crazy open school people) — she understands all the issues facing APS and most importantly - she puts the STUDENTS first. Check out her website and sign up for her newsletter mirandaturner.org The caucus will be held in May - ONLINE - so no excuse not to vote.
She is one of the APE leaders. By default, that makes her a crazy open schools person.
Not at all. The open schools people are going to be born out to be not crazy. (OK, some of them are. :) ) But the ones who want schools open with ventilation and masks (like Miranda) are right. We've done huge damage to our kids by staying closed so long. She's got my vote.
LOL. “With ventilation”? Stop trying to rewrite history. APE wasn’t pushing for ventilation FFS. They’ve been pushing to go back - no matter what. Before we had ventilation, vaccines, heading into a surge, no testing, etc. You are forgetting where we were back in August with these crazy open schools people like MT. Totally irresponsible.
Ummm. We absolutely should have opened in august. Case rates were super low and we saw from Europe that schools were opening safely. Stop trying to rewrite history that it was just some crazies calling for school to open august. The science and data absolutely supported opening, especially elementary. I wish we would have started open and reverted to DL over the winter surge (w elementary still being in-person). But whatever. We are in the present. I’d like to have a board member advocating a default position of open even if I may disagree at certain points (like during the surge). 1 board member aggressive on opening is good. The other 4 will fight tooth and nail to avoid 5 days until all kids are vaccinated. I’m sure duran’s response to Sb 1303 is to figure out how to get a waiver. I’d like to ask the candidates whether they think the SB should vote on a waiver from complying w SB1303.
No, we did not have the “science and data” back then which is why we all laughed about the dumb signs. And they were pushing to open right through the surge. Totally irrational. We are opening 5 days this fall. Stop with the fictional fearmongering.
Why fight this when everyone knows that schools all around the country were able to open safely with masks and distancing?? The decisions to keep schools closed was ridiculous. What if every other essential business just shut down?
Back when Duran worked out his RTS plan there were still 1/3rd of the school districts that were 100% virtual. Many in densely-populated, overcapacity areas. It was a reasonable, prudent decision at the time. Now kids are back in the classroom he's working on getting more kids back if possible. And all kids will be back by the fall. I agree we should have closed bars & restaurants over schools. But we didn't.
Wouldn’t hold your breath. And this back by fall BS means nothing to the seniors who have all but given up. But they’ve been the last on the list since the beginning so they’re used to being screwed over.
yeah, ok. Seniors unfortunately had their big year taken from them. They'll survive. I don't know what you mean by "last on the list" but whatever. If the seniors harbor resentment about their screwed-up final year for the rest of their lives, it's because the parents are making it out to be such an utterly traumatic situation that can never be overcome. It sucks for everyone. People need to get over themselves believing it's been hardest for them or their kid.
