APS: It's too hard to go back 5 days/week

This is what we got from our superintendent:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) new guidance around social distancing in schools gives us the opportunity to consider expanding in-person instruction to include additional days. We are assessing student needs and working with our capacity architects to identify each school’s capacity and will share more information after Spring Break.

At least they're working over spring break. APS administration is taking the holiday.

That is a great development and one that makes sense - they don't have disrupt current schedules/protocols and can focus on making this work for our learners who struggled the most this year.

Have they made clear who is eligible for summer school?

Almost no one. Kids have to be ESL or more than one grade level behind.

Merely one full grade level behind is acceptable, so no summer school for you

My kid is in 1st and at K level. Since it’s the end of the year almost is that behind enough? I’ve been told he doesn’t qualify. APS doesn’t care that my kid will finish first grade not knowing how to read.

Just when I think I can't come closer to losing my mind, APS inches me closer.

FIGURING OUT HOW TO RETURN TO IN PERSON IS A NATURAL OUTGROWTH OF THE DECISIONS THAT WERE MADE TO PURSUE FULL VIRTUAL AND THEN HYBRID. This was never not a natural evolution or consequence of those decisions. This is a manufactured crisis.

If APS intends to offer both virtual and in person options in the fall--exactly what will change or be different between now and then? Really. WHAT WILL BE DIFFERENT?

I am beyond enraged by this insanity.

I am more angry at CDC, which should have updating their guidance much, much earlier.

COVID is a manufactured crisis? I think it is you who are insane.

Read more closely--this is an APS manufactured crisis. They chose to do virtual, then hybrid. It was always inevitable that they would eventually have to figure out how to return in person. They have made this crisis.

Nothing really has changed, so why would APS do anything different? Shaking our fists at APS and FCPS will get us little more than commiseration. We're still bouncing back-and-forth between orange and red on the CDC categories. SB1303 hasn't been signed into law. Nothing has changed from a month ago. The risk and background requirements are same, except for the 3 feet thing. You're dreaming if you think that matters. This is year is toast. Get over it and move on. APS, FCPS, etc. are just running out the clock on this part of the game. Everyone should focus on the summer and fall. They are. If we spin your wheels on the next three months, we're going to miss out on the ability to influence what happens after that.

You really think the community has ANY influence over what APS does?? They know what they're going to do, they just won't let us in on it until the last minute when it becomes "too complex to change".

I'm praying for the emergency clause with SB1303 to get approved.

yup.. I'm still so confused how this is even legal. We are paying ridiculous taxes to live here for a quality education.

Until mid - August when APS announced its still too difficult to get everyone back full-time. I have no faith in APS and it seems they would rather keep the kids home as long as possible to avoid dealing with logistics.

Why? That will impact the fall, not the last 2 months of school.

At this point, when the teachers are vaccinated, it is criminal to force kids to stay home and stare at iPads all day.
