How is there not a thread about that lunatic dad who screamed at the Loudon school board?

I'd love to meet the Karen that started this thread. Get a life lady. You're probably one of those wack job parents that enjoys the staycation locked up in your house and are advocating that the US go to a 4 day work week when this is all over. News flash, vaccines are rolling and your coronacation is coming to an end!

Or, she's a teacher.

You never advocated for them before. You won’t in the future. Most parents in this area in fact ADAMANTLY protest students in those groups being zoned for their school because “they bring the test scores down” and “take resources from my kids.” You avoid buying in neighborhoods that zone to schools that serve those groups. So stop. It’s disingenuous and gross.

Stop painting with such a broad brush.
You've been spending far too much time on this board.

I spend time in schools in real life. This was CONSTANT at meetings pre pandemic. Constant.

His frustration is real and understandable. No he’s not giving a long, academic speech. He’s just being real and saying what many, many parents are feeling.

Why aren’t the kids in school when everyone else has managed to figure it out in the same amount of time? I find it telling that in an area with such an abnormally intense and demanding grind is the last one to go back to (DC) normal. They got a taste of the good life and are now COMPLETELY taking advantage of the situation.

The rest of the country hasn’t gone back! And the ones that have are getting two days of concurrent.
And numbers in NOVA are higher than in most parts of the country.

+1

Alternate facts from the lying angry mob.

About 50% of US students are in virtual school. The others have some kind of hybrid or full time school. Not everyone has gone back, but a lot of schools have.

The dad looks like a world class a$$hole. He is not helping his cause at all.

Looks like is a good phrase. Honestly, with schools closed for so long and DL being the major CF it is with no end in sight, parents are frustrated and angry. This is our kids the SB is messing with. All we want is what's best for them and the system is failing. His outburst is understandable given the situation.

You want what's best for your kid at the expense of public health rates in the community. Sorry - no intelligent government is going for that. Move to Florida or Texas.

So uninformed you are. NJ is open. so is NY state (and city). Can you move?

NJ is not open. Neither is NY state (and city). PARTS may be but not the whole state. I'm from NY and DH is from NJ. ALL our family is there in different parts of the state. None are in school. Only 1 was in school until it closed back up again. All others have been home since March. Nice try!

My fault, I should have said *some* parts. The fact remains that opening schools can be done.

This guy is not a lunatic. Frankly, I think he's a HERO. God bless him. I wish he would come the FCPS board meetings and have a few words there too.

And now FCPS is advocating for more money to make up for the loss this year not paid for by the people who need it, so I understand the frustration monetarily at least from a person like this.

You can’t claim schools need to be open to serve and support marginalized kids and then get pissed if taxes are slightly pissed to serve and support them. You either care or you don’t.

Well most families in NOVA are choosing to remain virtual, so this is probably true.

Actually not true. Perhaps for Loudoun - but the pendulum is swinging the other way and at least in Alexandria, Fairfax and Arlington the majority of parents are pushing for in person.

Uhhhh at the FCPS school I work at, over 100 parents have switched their kid to virtual when given the opportunity last month.

Good, so it’ll be even easier to get RTS off the ground and help set protocols.

I mean, sure? But it is not the "majority of parents." It is a minority of parents. A minority of majority affluent parents. All the people screaming about "oh what about the most vulnerable." The most vulnerable and at risk students that are not logging on to do anything are remaining virtual.

DP. Do you really think the parents of the most-vulnerable students have the time to lobby against DL? Do you really think it’s easy for parents who *have* to leave the house for work to help their kids with DL? Thank god for the affluent parents who are doing the lobbying and speaking for the most vulnerable populations.

Get child care. The volume table don’t want to go back. It’s the affluent who can afford but refuse to pay for care having the fits.

I have no problem affording childcare, and I suspect you don’t either. The low-income parents who have to leave every day for work aren’t so lucky. They have to leave their kids at home to figure out DL for themselves. No wonder so many kids are checking out.

The narrative that the affluent are the ones who want schools open is disgusting and perverse. The data show low income children are falling behind. We have to educate them. Closed schools are creating enormous race, income, and gender inequality from women dropping out of the labor force in record numbers. That is what the social science says. UMC are using lower class kids as an excuse to sleep in and bake in pajamas.

You do realize that lower-income families and PoC are choosing distance learning at much higher rates than UMC/MC communities, right? Look at the differences between north and south Arlington.

What they choose is irrelevant. The data show they are falling behind. Society has a responsibility to educate them.

Yes, angry white men know better than the rest of us. Of course, we all need to listen to them.

What are you going to do? Round up all of the poor, brown kids and force your education on them?

Um, yes, that's literally what compulsory education is. And it's quite possible that it will resume before some people are ready. Then we'll either let their children continue to not be educated by very hard working but ineffective remote teachers or force them to go to school.

Sorry, just become some angry white man throws a temper tantrum, doesn't mean it will happen.

It's not 1952 anymore.

He is representative of millions out there.
And, you know who is suffering the worse the longer schools stay closed?
Poor students. Students of color. Immigrant students. Students with disabilities.
That "white man" was speaking for them too..

You and he DGAF about poor or brown kids. And you certainly do NOT speak for them. They chose DL at a much higher rate than white suburban families.

Sit TF down.

The parents that want to stay home have the luxury of working from home or they have an employer that has them sitting at home collecting a paycheck. I wonder what would happen if the DMV was required to go back in the office. Put yourself in those shoes for a minute. Fairfax had an option for several thousand dollars a month PER KID they will watch them. Where have been all the covid outbreaks from that??? Why should parents be paying extra when our taxes should be covering this? OR, give parents a voucher to take their money elsewhere -- guaranteed school would be back in session then.

Yes, there are parents that need school because they don't have any other option except to leave kids at home by themselves or quit their jobs. BUT there is a huge number of kids that are struggling. They are losing their motivation, their self worth, and are developing mental health issues because they cannot learn this way -- and some of that might be permanent since these are the formative years. A few months was one thing but now we are in two school years and some jackasses want it to go for a third.

There is a learning gap occuring. Kids in private are in person and doing fine. They have no outbreaks. Those kids are thriving, but there aren't enough spaces for the other kids and a lot of parents cannot afford it. Hell, my neighbor's kid is virtual with a private (she is getting treated for cancer) and that kid gets five days a week and a LOT more instructions than my kids. Those teachers seem to be rocking the concurrent model that is way too hard/difficult for the public school teachers.

There are teachers that are enjoying their four days a week a few hours a day schedule. They are phoning it in. They don't want to go back, but they were first in line to get a vaccine. They hang out with friends and do day trips - so it isn't fear of covid.

They just need their older kids to babysit the younger ones while the parents work in person jobs. It has nothing to do with fear of the virus or thinking DL is a better education.
