Sorry, but my kid turned 6 the first month of kindergarten in September because she wasn’t allowed to start early. Oh well. Must be 5 by 9/1 or you can’t start. Different rukes in different places. |
+1000. I think it’s the apex of DC-area competitiveness. Kindergarten is not a cage match and “fair competition” is not the point of school. Education is. Do whatever you think will most help your child learn. Period. |
We are in the DMV... in MD you can do early entrance through 10/15. A child going to K at 7 is too old. Yours is fine especially if they are not academically strong or otherwise they might be bored in school as ES curriculums are generally slow. |
Regardless, a 6 year old in kindergarten is not "too old" they are the correct age in many (most) places. The "too old" business is tiresome and just plain incorrect on these forums. |
What? Anyone who redshirts a March birthday is just a complete idiot setting their kid up for SO MUCH TEASING when they're older. |
I get summer birthdays, but my 4th grader with a May birthday would definitely think it was weird if one her friends turned 11 on the same day that she turned 10, especially since everyone has been turning 10 this year and they all know it and talk about it. |
Can you not read? A SEVEN year old in K is definitely too old. PLEASE tell me how many people you know whose children turned 7 in March of Kindergarten. |
The only person I knew who turned 7 in kinder is my brother in law who was adopted internationally and came to the US at 5 speaking no English so his mom held him back from kinder so he could catch up on English. Your opinion on being "too old" is exactly that. Good thing more sensible people than you make the rules. A few months here or there makes no difference. It's not a race and you don't get a cookie for finishing high school first. |
DP. Hold up, crazy anti-redshirter. Are you saying here that you think that because YOUR September kid turned 6 in first, people who follow the cutoff rules and send their about-to-turn-6 kids on time to K in districts with a 9/1 cutoff should instead apply for early entrance? Because, I guess, you say so? Man, every time I think DCUM anti-redshirters can't get crazier, one of y'all says "Hold my beer." |
My child has that where his friends will turn a year older in the same month. It is very strange. |
First, the discussion is about a March kid and yes, parents should consider early entry as it makes no sense to hold a 5 year old back. |
So, "hold my beer" it is, then. |
| Public education is not set up well for boys, and in my opinion, it is fair to red-shirt boys. We know many boys on medicine and who have behavior problems in my sons grade. I'm sure some parents may judge our red shirting decision, but it was the right decision at the time, plus our kid was born 6 weeks early. |
Honestly, there are a few loud crazies here, but in the real world nobody cares. My kid has one friend who is much older. I suspect it’s because he was out of school a lot when he was younger due to medical issues related to a birth defect. I never asked his parents because it’s none of my business. Know what? The kids know he’s older, but nobody cares. He doesn’t get teased. No one thinks he’s stupid. Because, once again, kids are smarter than adults. He’s a great kid and I’m glad he’s part of my kid’s class. |
| Stop saying redshirting when you mean holding back. People are not looking to game sports eligibility in droves! |
