Redshirting? Will there be more this year?

So you are a hypocrite.

I would absolutely do it. We are homeschooling our child with a January birthday in order to preserve the option.

If he had been born a few hours earlier, it wouldn’t be an option. As it stands now, he will be 6 years, 3 months when he starts K in 2021. Seems old. Maybe not. Will most redshirt if it’s an option for them this year?

6 years is old for K? Huh? My kid just turned 6 and started kindergarten, his birthday is 3 days after the cutoff. He's one of the oldest but totally within range of kids starting K.

My kid will be same -- she'll turn 6 in early October, born a few days after cut off.

I think most will. I would have if my August baby was sent to enter KG this year. No question whatsoever.

There's a redshirt cutoff in your district? Never heard of that but its a good idea.

I'd homeschool K and send to first next year.

She may skip regular K if the private school evaluation recommends that. Distance learning is a joke for the very ones. I would rather her be the older smartest than younger dumbest in class.

Smarts has to do with IQ. Being the oldest won’t change her IQ.

That was my initial thought as well. While virtual K does sound like a nightmare, and while I guess starting K at 6 and 3mo doesn’t sound odd, starting senior year at 18 and 3mo does.

They will be in K when they turn 7. Kids just need to know how to read and basic math. Most parents can teach that. Sounds like lazy parents.

There’s only two weeks left of Kindergarten after their June birthday, but yeah, this seems a bit much.

Yes. I think it will be more competitive for private school spots, elite sports teams, college, etc... That all sounds so far away when you have a kindergartner but it is something that should be taken into consideration.

Our district doesn’t even allow redshirting, if your kid is 6 during the school year, they go to kindergarten. If they’re turning 7, they head to 1st. I have a kid with a March birthday who will be turning 6 at the end of kindergarten, if I keep him back one year, he’ll just end up having to start 1st. It’s all tied to federal funding. They won’t allow anyone younger either or grade skipping.

Holding your child back is not a gift. It is not going to make her smarter.

That is not in our area at all. Its not tied to federal funds.

I agree with this though I didn’t redshirt my kindergartner this year either. She will be 6 in December and I thought the better option long term is not for her to be so old for the grade. That said I have the privilege of being able to afford private K this year. We are a dual working family household and I know virtual K will be so miserable.

I don’t think anyone would ever redshirt a December birthday. I understand a July-September birthday, but December? If you redshirted your daughter She would be turning 7 3 months after starting K... that is insane

Depending on the sport they will be put by age, not grade. They will be made fun of for being held back.
