OMG, these lists are so ridiculous.
Visit the schools with your kid and stop bowing to the Naviance and gossip gods. You'd be surprised at how much you learn by taking a tour, talking to students and doing some research. |
You'd be surprised at visceral negative reactions to JMU. |
I would say none of these stats are anything to sneer at (directed to some of the prior PPs, not you). |
I don't know anyone who has had a "visceral negative reaction to JMU." The kids we know who go there or graduated from there have absolutely loved it. And these are some of the nicest kids. When we visited, my kids and I thought it was a great campus with a beautiful quad and friendly students. Perhaps it's just you. |
+100 DCUM makes me laugh. |
I agree these are right. The SCHEV statistics are very helpful if you are looking at individual schools. For example, the average GPA of the enrolled freshman at GMU in the class of 2017-2018 was 3.90 for 25th percentile, 3.67 for median 50% and 3.42 for bottom 25%. That comports with my experience as a professor. http://research.schev.edu/enrollment/B10_FreshmenProfile.asp. For UVA it jumps significantly. Plug in the name of the university. This will give you SAT, ACT and GPA of enrolled students in fall of 2017. |
This is basically the same ranking from the 90’s. Maybe JMU had a slight edge on Tech at the time. Tech seemed to be a bit more ( teeny tiny bit) of a safety at the time. But ultimately the more things change, the more they stay the same. |
Neither JMU nor VT are safety schools for most kids these days. |
Nor GMU which is only a hairsbreadth GPA away from JMU and same average SAT. That said this doesn't indicate what you need to get in, only the average scores of accepted students from one FCPS hs. Still seems pretty competitive to be a NOVA student applicant at any of the public colleges/universities... |

You really need a 4.0 and have completed calculus with an A to get into VT engineering. |
Things have really changed in the last ten years. The SCHEV statistics indicate the GPA of the enrolled freshman at GMU in the class of 2017-2018 was 3.90 for 25th percentile, 3.67 for median 50% and 3.42 for bottom 25%. . http://research.schev.edu/enrollment/B10_FreshmenProfile.asp. Plug in the name of the VA University. This will give you SAT, ACT and GPA of actual enrolled students in fall of 2017. |
Funny. |
+1 It is very difficult as a student from NOVA to get into most of these schools. |
| Go UVA or go home. Or W&M if bricks and boredom are your things. |
