Trump to widow of Sgt. La David Johnson: 'He knew what he signed up for'

I actually understand what he may have been trying to convey to the grieving widow, and that is, "your husband understood the extreme peril of his military service, and yet he was such a brave man that he nevertheless agreed to undertake that burden on behalf of his country each and every time he was called upon to do so."

I really wish the media would avoid harping on the low-hanging fruit, which comes across as overkill and feeds into the President's narrative that the media hates him and is out to get him about every little thing. Stick to reporting the bigger picture, it is awful enough.

Trump said he didn't say those words, and he has proof. OK then, what is the proof?

I agree with the PP. It really shows poor reading comprehension and taking the most uncharitable reading of words possible to jump to the other conclusion. Trump derangement led to that. (I don't like Trump and didn't and wouldn't vote for him, but some things are impossible to miss).

How do you charitably read not using his name but calling him "my guy"?

I guess we should be thankful that Fox and Friends didn't say that black people should know their place.

That's actually fair to say, since the AP has found a number of gold star widows and family members who have not heard from Trump at all - letter, call or otherwise. He only made these calls because the press shamed him into it.

He most likely thought he was saying the right thing re: he knew what he signed up for. Another translation of that statement is he volunteered to serve his country in a dangerous occupation, and gave the ultimate sacrifice. It’s just that Trump summarizes and articulates in a way that is less than comforting.

I don't think anyone believes he said this in order to be an assh*le. He just *is* an assh*le.

Like someone else said - the people who love him love him. They are able to see the insane and weird and stupid things he does and find some way to make it all right, even though anyone else doing or saying the same thing would be correctly lambasted. For the rest of us, it's just another day in the disturbing world of living with this assh*le in charge.

With those words Trump would have better served the family by not calling.

I do not know but I do know that Kelly has said more than once that he does not want his son's death politicized. Yet, Trump trots it out to try to get a dig in on Obama. Some people cannot help themselves.

I think he looked like this when he heard:

Why is this democratic congresswoman politicizing something that should have no place in politics? The president spoke for 5 minutes with the grieving widow. And this democrat picked out one sentence out of context? Shameful. The widow probably hated it to see his late husband's death being used on CNN to attack the commander in chief.

I agree. And, Fredrica Wilson really should not be making any of this conversation public. It was a private conversation between a widow and the CIC.
Shame on Ms. Wilson.

How do you know that the widow asked her to make this public?

Well, apparently the Johnson's mom was also in the car and heard what was said. She told Washington Post that she felt it was an insult to her, her DH, her son, and his family. Is she allowed to speak about this?

Have a script for the President to read. Period.

I tried to stay off this cesspool of a protest site linked to some BS but, after the 15 telephone calls I got after one post within 30 minutes I find it hard to believe this wasn’t a set up: media here clamored for the call. The call was made the call was criticized.

$18 billion isn’t going to help. Your people don’t have what it takes.
