I might mention, I almost puked while watching the SSMA administration being "commended" and called "astute" in dealing with this situation. Those are not the first words that would come to my mind.

Completely agree. I also can't believe that the charter board seemed fine with what happened.

Is the charter school board accountable to elected officials? Is there some way that we can complain (effectively) about this?

The charter school board is appointed by the mayor. Otherwise it is completely unaccountable.

And the mayor is accountable to the people he represents. Start speaking up loudly - he should come down on the PCSB for mishandling this. They're supposed to represent us if they're appointed by the mayor.

I guess we can only hope that parents vote with their feet and decide to walk from SSMA. (I'm sure many have no other option though, unfortunately.)

It will not help SSMA, but families should push for a more accountable board (just as DCPS parents should for their schools). It is inevitable that issues will arise in the future (whether logistical problems as at SSMA or unethical problems as at a number of schools), and taxpayers should have input. As for SSMA and other charters, families should push Catania to call a hearing on a variety of issues that have come up in charter schools and hear input from families, the schools, and the board.

Of course, if DCPS wasn't hanging on to about 25 empty buildings, this problem wouldn't have happened.

That must be why this has happened to all the other charter schools - definitely not their own mismanagement. /sarcasm

Welcome to school choice - the choice to to be played for fools by a school administration without a school building. The choice to frantically look for a school in late August. The choice to have no idea what your family's daily commute will be. The choice not to have a good neighborhood school, but to be held hostage by the private sector that focuses on profit, not families.

Welcome to Charter schools.

Remember before Rhee when DCPS would have buildings not ready for the first day if school? And it wouldn't get text books out until the school year was half over. Or it would have subs teaching classes all year.

Because the alternative of at least 50 years or several generations of incompetence (not to mention at least a billion dollars worth of financial mis-management) is preferable?

Bitch, please.

Charters are going to have to deliberate shoot themselves in the head (not the 3 or 4 you hate, but all 60 or so that everybody loves) for your vinegar to even be worth diluting.

You are a miserable bee-yotch with an anti-education, anti-child, anti-DC agenda.

And no, I have nothing whatsoever to do with SS. I just know that you suck.

Is this news-worthy? Possibility for press?

This is like two people in glass houses throwing rocks at each other.

There is fraud and incompetence in both DCPS and DCPCS. There are also caring and dedicated educators working in both that are doing amazing things.

Neither is going away any time soon, so calm down.

Dang, girlfriend! Are you hormonal or what? A lot of unnecessary vitriol there. Calm down, be civil.

Just drove by as I live in the neighborhood. People are moving furniture in and there is also a "sign" up.
