Lafayette/Bucknell vs Nescacs

Would group Hamilton and Middlebury with Bates and Colby. The Colby-Midd academic rivalry is on and Colby is on a roll. Agree their President has them in a great spot with near completion of $1 billion capital campaign and their athletic facilities are amazing. By contrast Midd has struggled.

Middlebury is only struggling insofar as USNews, Forbes, and other rankings are now counting non-degree summer students when determining financial resources. Look it up.

Middlebury is hemorrhaging money on their language institute. Had to reduce benefits and staff. AI completely wipes out the need to speak anything other than English.

Today I found out every non-English speaking country fell into the ocean.

Newsflash!!! The Middlebury Institute is closing by 2027. Midd will make a killing when it sells off that property in downtown Monterey.

Colby, Colgate, Middlebury, Haverford, and Bates are comparable top 20-25 schools. Colby is on a tear. The other 3 not so much. Presidents of small LACs not named Amherst or Williams make a big difference. The prior President of Bowdoin did a wonderful job and the current President of Colby is fantastic. I do envision Colby overtaking Midd.

Does your twentieth post on the chain win you a door prize?

The language schools, Breadloaf are all profitable though they did show deficits during Covid. They are closing the Middlebury Institute of International Studies which has been the cause of their small nagging deficit.

Nobody else does and nobody ever will until they resume submitting CDS reports like every other reputable school. Colby is doing well but you are reaching a rarified level of Boosting previously out of reach for everyone except Bucknell (pipeline to the street) and Holy Cross (holy board representation).

IMO, Colgate had 3,000 app drop, Midd smaller decine but rankings have nosedived probably more than any other LAC. Forget Conn College, Trinity has seen much better days. Bucknell
Lafayette, and Lehigh fighting it out for kids who see Pennsylvania as a destination(yikes). Wesleyan and Bates carving out the really woke crowd. Lesser prestige schools like Hobart and St. Lawrence in tough spots.

Bucknell, Lafayette and Lehigh will weather the demographic cliff. Their endowments are healthy. They are known in the East Coast population centers. While they probably do not attract large amounts of kids from the growing population centers of Texas and Florida, they probably have kids from those states. Their engineering programs are solid as well.

I do agree that St. Lawrence, Hobart and Union type schools are in a tough spot. I have a neighbor who opted for a lower SEC School over one of those schools. The reasons cited were weather and perceived campus environment. (I live in the tri-state area.) That choice would have been unheard ten years ago.

Only thing knew about Middlebury is they produce high school foreign language teachers.

And they are probably among the best trained language teachers anywhere. Are you disparaging teaching as a career? That would say far more about you than anything else.

Colby is a lovely school. But the only reason it is so selective is because they eliminated the supplemental essay and wave the application fees for anyone who asks (or maybe for everyone, I can't remember).

Why all the Colby bashing it is a strong school with lots of momentum. Middlebury boosters are very condescending especially for a sckool that has plummeted to 19th right near Haverfotd.

Middlebury was recently rated AA/Aa3 by S&P and Moody's. Moody's revised the outlook from stable to negative noting recent deficits. Those are very strong ratings. So they clearly are not very concerned about Middlebury's finances.

But all of you arm chair finance whizzes know more than they do. And don't go insulting them - trust me - they know more than you.

Based on statistics factors, Middlebury could place anywhere from 12th to 23rd in U.S. News this year.
