APS Holiday 6/6

This was foreseeable and should have been in the calendar already. Montgomery county had it as a day off when the calendar was first released.

Get it and will do.

I’m a white agnostic but I’ve lived in the Middle East and am very familiar with the Islamic faith and holidays. It’s one thing to shut everything down in a Muslim majority country (even with the uncertainty around the exact dates) because as the majority, most are celebrating and are ok with that. Quite different in a place where Muslims are the minority. This is just over the top, and Eid al-Adha celebrations are not time sensitive in that they have to be undertaken during the school day on June 6.

PP here with another thought, if they wanted true equity then all high schools would have half days throughout the entire month of Ramadan when older students are fasting. And Muslim teachers and staff would be permitted admin leave for half days for the entire month.

Two Muslim speakers asking for the day off. One speaker says there are families with about 100 students who belong the Clarendon Islamic Center who attend APS.

TJ mom was a good speaker saying hundreds band/music/choir Students affected if the Hershey Park music festival cancelled b/c of June 6th and its the LAST possible date for the festival. Students have been working all year and everything is already paid for and asked if they can they still go voluntarily.

All of this, a thousand times.

Granted. Now let everyone else go to school and their events

This. Excused absence for those that celebrate is just fine.

+1

What are these 100 kids missing if they are off for the day?

Ok vote wont be for a while- long HR presentation starting now.

I just watched the speakers, even she admitted Eid "may fall on June 6th this year." Absolute nonsense

I cannot believe they will make them move the Shriver graduation.

And as much as I respect them asking for volunteer activities, I don’t know if that is such a clear line. If you have dances, janitors may have to work.

Is anyone explaining to the school board that this isn’t a holiday that requires the kids to miss school?
Anonymous
Is this going to happen every year? Is there a range of dates where Eid may fall that is reasonably known? I guess I don't understand how planning can be done for a district the size of APS when there is a floating holiday.

Honestly, this isn’t helping foster good feelings about equity and inclusion. The board should think about the resentment they are causing towards minority religious groups when they plan poorly like this.
