One is too many. It is unfair, unsafe, and a slap in the face to women. And, a violation of Title IX.
It is interesting that she is choosing this as a hill to die on. It is NOT a popular stance.

This from Feb. 19:
A transgender-identifying male, competing under the name “Katie,” from Cumberland’s Greely High School, came out on top in the girls’ pole vault competition on Monday during the Maine Indoor Track Meet at Bates College.

The student is a biological male who previously competed in boys’ pole-vaulting as a mid-level athlete. Since identifying as a girl, “Katie” has been allowed to compete against female students.

At Monday’s meet, “Katie” jumped 11 feet, a mediocre score for boys, but within just one inch of Maine’s girls’ pole-vault champion, who set an 11-foot, one-inch record last year at the National Pole Vault Summit.

He jumped a full eight inches higher than the second-place winner among the girls.

The student’s participation in the event came in opposition to an executive order issued by President Donald Trump earlier this month threatening to pull federal funds from schools that allow males to compete in women’s sports.

🙄 yes, pp. we know about this incident- it’s the reason for the whole thread. This issues wasn’t plucked out of thin air. It’s all based on the track meet.

Right. So then you have the governor of Maine defying an EO to defend the grotesque spectacle of the track meet, in a state that is struggling financially. And the federal government is threatening to withdraw funds because of her defense of something that is extremely unpopular even in her own state. It makes the governor seem like a religious fanatic. Trump, who should be coming off as a horrible bully, is seen instead as protecting a struggling state and the girls in it from a religious extremist.

As a lifelong Democrat, sometimes I think the party is doomed. This is not the behavior of any politician who wants to win an election. It is the behavior of a cult member who is willing to destroy the entire party on the altar of her cult beliefs. When you have someone as vile as Trump appear to be the one who is on the side of justice and fairness, you’ve lost the plot.

EOs are NOT LAWS. How is that difficult for people to understand. They are mandates for the agency’s to carry out. So the Maine governor is following the law. In a situation like this, they’d wind up in court no matter what was done, so better to be following the law and be protecting kids. Not to mention the added benefit of being seen by Maine constituents has having a backbone.

She is only seen in Maine as having a backbone in a subset of Augusta, Waterville, and Orono. In the rest of the state, she’s seen as harming the state to defend the indefensible.

The amount of Dems who have MAGA beliefs and use MAGA tells is staggering.

It’s not MAGA to want the Democrats to win again and soon. I know you are a cultist that would prefer the Democrats to lose perpetually so that high school girls can continue to stand beneath boys at track meets, but that is an extremist cult belief.

Every time you say Dems are in a cult, it’s clear from your histrionics that you’re a cultish MAGA.

No. You can’t hide the truth. More and more sane Democrats see the facts here. That’s why Trump picked this issue to push on the issue of executive power, because maybe 1% of the entire country thinks what happened in the Maine track meet is fair and just. This is cult capture of the Democratic Party, just as there was cult capture of the Republican Party. Unfortunately for the Democrats, they picked a cult that is wildly unpopular, unlike the Republicans who at least had the good sense to back a cult that could win elections.

The Democrats lost the election on this issue, and they are going to continue to lose badly until they eject the cultists that control the party. But I don’t see that happening, unfortunately. I wish common sense would prevail and the moderates would sideline the cultists, so the Democrats could win again, but so far it isn’t happening.

Every time you double down, it’s obvious you’re lying. Dems aren’t this stupid about laws and the congressional/legal process, and even if they don’t care about this issue or are against it, they’re not anywhere as fearful and breathless as you.

Every time you double down, it’s obvious you are a wholly irrational cult member who can’t be reasoned with.

Winning is not everything. I want a country that is fair for everyone, regardless of gender, religion, or other beliefs. As a grown woman who has lost to men in many ways and who has no transgender child, I still firmly believe that all natural and legal rights should be equally accessible to all humans. I do not want my party or any other party to deviate from this fundamental belief just to win. Politics is not a sport; politicians should not enter politics merely to win. They should be driven by conviction and a commitment to making life better for all citizens.

You don’t want a country that is fair for everyone. You want a country that embraces and codifies male supremacy. And that’s what you are getting, unfortunately.

The Democrats used to be the party of fairness and making life better for all, but they’ve instead become the party of the elite, devoted to propagating a deeply misogynist belief system. Those who want a party that actually makes life better for all citizens won’t find that in the Democrats any more.

Again - don’t waste time arguing with someone so pathetic that thinking about what sports trans people play is important to them.

She said f you to Trump and that’s going to make cross party constituents happy. No one likes a bully and no one likes a d*ck. And unlike pp most Me folks have better things to think about than this topic and just don’t want to be bullied

+1. I agree with conservatives on the transgender issue but still can’t believe Trump threatened a governor like he did.
Just horrible!

It wasn't a threat. It was a statement of fact.
I'm thrilled we have a person in the oval office who isn't afraid of confrontation.
Quite a breath of fresh air compared to the last one who, we all know, couldn't make an even easy decision.

When you lead a sad life, you may find enjoyment in seeing others get bullied. Donald was bullying - that is not bravery. People with courage do not punch down; they punch up. A bully tries to project power by threatening to withdraw love, financial support, or other benefits if the dependents do not follow their dictates.

Truth hurts. Enforcing laws is not bullying. Biology is not bullying. Grow up.

She is enforcing Title IX. This is not about biology—it’s about individual rights. A transgender person has equal protection and rights under the law. I’m sorry that your thinking hasn’t evolved enough to recognize transgender people as human.

Of course they are human. Human males and human females. It is evolutionary Biology. And it’s immutable.

You have no connection to Maine whatsoever. That is very, very clear. You are just so wrong on every point here.

Percentage of teens Nationally who identify as transgender: 3%
Of the 3% who play sports: 40%
Percentage of transgender teens who play a sports: 1.2%
There are 42.9 million teenagers in the U.S.

Number of athletes in the NCAA: ~500,000
Number of transgender athletes in the NCAA: fewer than 10

This is not a problem that needs addressing. It affects very few women!

So the women and girls who lose to men just need to suck it up?

I don’t think so. Democrats will continue to lose until they change position on this issue. Hope you like a decade of Republican rule.

Yes, the women and girls who lose need to suck it up, no matter who they lose to. It's sports, sometimes you lose. Sometimes you get beat by somebody better. Sometimes you get beat by somebody who worked harder. Sometimes you get beat by somebody whose mommy and daddy made more money so they've had personal trainers since they were 10. And sometimes a very small number of players will play against a transgender athlete. And sometimes they will lose. They can deal with it.

Everyone has this misguided idea that transwomen athletes always win, and that's just not true.

Also, I am so sick of people who don't give two craps about women's rights in any other context clutching their pearls when they hear about a trans athlete. You want to help women and girls? Fight for our reproductive rights. Fight for our equal pay. Fight to have those goddamn backlogs of rape kits tested. You care about women's and girls' sports? Fight for equal funding. Volunteer as a coach. Go watch professional women's sports teams.

Jesus. Stop with the faux outrage and obsession with other people's genitals. It's so pathetic.

Do you think there are any physical differences between men and women?

Governor Mills sums it up succinctly:

“[D]o not be misled: this is not just about who can compete on the athletic field, this is about whether a President can force compliance with his will, without regard for the rule of law that governs our nation.”

Honestly, those of you who think this was "bullying" - how do you get out of bed every morning? Grow up. And if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

Late to the thread, but is Governor Mills asserting that she is following the law by NOT excluding transgender athletes from women's sports?

Pick a different non losing reason. This just looks petty and makes her look stupid .

Then tell congress to do its job instead of hiding out in the felon’s butthole! If this is the will of the people, why isn’t Congress acting?
