Underwhelming campus experience

In general, I think Duke is attractive but the East Campus ghetto for freshmen was a turnoff. Everything there seemed comparatively rundown, and they feature the West Campus almost exclusively in their marketing materials so it's a bit of a shock to find out the East Campus even exists.

And you use the term "ghetto" because?

Any connotation you want derived here?

It's a world unesco site. And Poe's room is on display. And Montecello. And the vineyards around C'vile. And the beauty of the countryside. If you can't appreciate any of that then the problem is you so I can tell your kid didn't get in. Take your sour grapes elseshere.

World unesco site doesn’t make something pretty. Why you’re the only one defensive on this thread should really be called to question.

UVA boosters are always so aggressive

We found much of UVA to have an odd aroma. Like something between moldy and an old shoe. So off putting. The tour guide said it’s petty regular.

Because it's a less attractive area where freshmen mostly live apart from everyone else.

Then just say that.

NP. I loved East Campus when I was at Duke. Different vibe than West, but not in a bad way. Just different.

Though I was assigned to West my first year and loved the convenience, I absolutely see the benefit of having all the first years living together on East. To me it’s actually a huge plus - helps forge friendships and community (and way more convenient than when first years were split between three campuses like back in my day.)

When I went back to visit a few years ago, I spent time on East. It’s still beautiful in its own way, and super easy to get to West. Not at all a ghetto. 🙄

It feels like a stuffy country club to me. And I went to another school of the same caliber that feels more down to earth.

I know lots of people love the campus, but DD hated the mismatched architectural styles. There are some gorgeous buildings/quads, but also some very ugly ones, with many buildings of assorted styles in between.

Interesting. We were the complete opposite. Thought UChicago was impressive and were completely underwhelmed by Northwestern. DC applied to neither.

Attends Vanderbilt instead, which DC found to be a much more impressive school than both Chicago and Northwestern.

dp. Interesting. We thought Vanderbilt was horrifically overrated and underwhelming on our visit.

DP. Couldn't agree more. I honestly don't get the hype.

Or, save a dozen words, like the PP did.

Fell in love with Vandy when I visited for law school. Signed up before I left campus. Zero regrets.

St Mary’s College of Md. My kid is somewhere between an introvert and downright antisocial. They said the campus was sad and boring because it was Saturday afternoon and no one was around. However, I loved the beachfront area with free canoe and paddle board rental.

NP. Whatever. The ghetto comment was stupid and incorrect.
