wow, look at the count for anything related to cell phone use. Definitely a high priority for parents to implement a district wide ban on smart phone use in schools.

Just like the MVA people, there is a very loud and vocal minority sliver of people who care a whole lot about this and scream from the hilltops. If most people didn’t want their kids to have phones, most people would not be giving their kids phones…but they do.

You should give a damn about your kid’s education. You can claim your angel child would never take their cellphone out in class (spoiler: they do) but even if they didn’t…. The rest of the students do which affects everyone in the classroom and disrupts learning. What about this don’t you understand?

I know my kid uses it in class. We montitor it. Sometimes to text us something important, sometimes teachers have them do something on it and sometimes goofing off. Focus on your own kid and stop demanding others do what you want as you don't want to parent yours.

DP but you’re clearly doing nothing by “monitoring.” Your kid is the problem. You’re the one not parenting your kids. Stop hiding behind “you don’t want to parent your kid” as an excuse. It’s mostly teachers here venting their frustrations with cellphones disrupting learning-not other parents. Wake up.

Also teachers who don’t want to have to deal with it.

What is the difference, if the kids don't have their phones they just use the chromebooks? I tried no phone and just a watch and they showed me how they could use the chromebook.

This. My son did not have a phone until 8th grade and then initially only a dumb phone. But didn’t really matter since you could surf the web endlessly on the chrome books. Especially now they dumped goguardian. I’m not sure what the answer is and I’m not opposed to the ban concept, I just don’t think it’s likely to change very much. But maybe I’ll be oleasantly surprised. I’d let the teachers vote on it, if it were up to mez

Most kids could get around go guardian. It was better than nothing but MCPS has priorities and its not the students.

There's a replacement for goguardian, Lightspeed.

I am truly shocked at the parents on here who are arguing against a cell phone ban in schools. Either you really have never been in a modern, public classroom in a high school and are woefully out of touch, or you believe your child’s access to the device (bc you parent so well, and are so busy after school) overrules any larger, evidence-based social good that would come for the whole school were they to be banned. The data show that phones are awful for developing brains and teachers on here and IRL are telling you that they need them banned… and you are selfishly and/or stupidly arguing against it. It’s really shocking and depressing.

My kid is my problem so I don't need you telling me to not send a phone because you cannot control your kids phone usage. I don't need to wake up. I take care of mine, start taking care of yours.

If being online is so harmful, why are you online? Some of our kids DO need to communicate with parents. If yours don't great. If you don't like phones, don't buy your kid a phone. But, no worries, they'll just use the chromebook or get a burner phone.

You’re the only poster who keeps coming back to defend your parenting and telling others to take care of theirs. Clearly you have some very deep issues you need to seek help for. Meanwhile, the rest of us will continue to advocate for education for all MCPS students and advocate for a cell phone ban. Try homeschooling if it helps because you cannot be untethered from your kids for 7 hours. It’s sad and disturbing.

This is the problem with public school. Parents who are obviously in the wrong but think they know better than teachers. Cell phone use in schools is a big problem. Private schools have figured this out and banned cell phone use.

Exactly. They have no idea what goes on in classrooms.
A cell phone ban will come.

dp.. you don't see the difference between adults and kids who are in school? Do you think if the adult was at work posting on this forum all day that this wouldn't be a distraction?

I wfh (private company), and some days, I don't have much to do, so I spend a lot of time on this forum and reading the news. It's a distraction. Kids are also distracted with their phones at school, including when they have things to do. I can self monitor. Many kids cannot.

That's great but how I raise my children is none of your business.

So glad this will never happen.

That's the only talking point you continue to parrot. No one wants to raise your kids. How they act in a PUBLIC school classroom is absolutely everyone's business. This is like you telling the police they can't arrest your kid because it's none of their business. You're a joke.

It's happening. Sorry you can't bother your kids all day. I'm sure they will be relieved to get a break from you.

Yes. What is so important that it can't wait for between classes? The kid obviously isn't paying attention in class.

You should try homeschooling if you are anti phone. It’s so odd you rant about phones on your electronics.
