wow, look at the count for anything related to cell phone use. Definitely a high priority for parents to implement a district wide ban on smart phone use in schools.

Just like the MVA people, there is a very loud and vocal minority sliver of people who care a whole lot about this and scream from the hilltops. If most people didn’t want their kids to have phones, most people would not be giving their kids phones…but they do.

Also teachers who don’t want to have to deal with it.

A significant portion of MCPS middle school parents are giving their kids’ smart phones rather than dumb ones because of peer pressure to do so. Your child doesn’t need a smart phone to reach you in an emergency. A flip phone that doesn’t connect to the internet will do. But the kids tell the parents all their friends have smart phones so the parents cave.

LA and NYC are heading in this direction. It'll only be a matter of time before MCPS follows suit.

They will follow suit when sued.

You should give a damn about your kid’s education. You can claim your angel child would never take their cellphone out in class (spoiler: they do) but even if they didn’t…. The rest of the students do which affects everyone in the classroom and disrupts learning. What about this don’t you understand?

I don’t care if kids are on their cell phones during class as long as they keep it quiet so that my kid isn’t disturbed as they learn.

You're not part of the solution, so just sit it out.

Did your MS or HS send out a survey for parents to complete to give their two cents about cell phones in school? Isn't it obvious parents want their kids with a phone if so many of them are sending their kid with a phone to school.

no, parents don't mind if their kids have phones, they just want the school to ban them in class so that phones aren't a distraction. Even if I take my kid's phone away, if the rest of the kid have their phones out, it is a distraction.. to everyone.

What is the difference, if the kids don't have their phones they just use the chromebooks? I tried no phone and just a watch and they showed me how they could use the chromebook.

Then, maybe teachers need to start teaching again and be firm with consequences for phones. If its not the phones, its somethign else that will be a distraction.

Focus on your own kids, let us parent ours. Until MCPS brings back payphones, its a huge issue for some kids with transportation. If your kid is in no activities/bus it may be ok but for those of us whose kids don't always know the pick up time and schedules change at teachers whims its a problem.

Mentioned earlier, but reiterating that smart watches are just as bad. MS kids blatantly scroll through notifications and text people from their wrist when they should be engaged in a lesson. Wish the MS and HS had the same rules as elementary school. Being a student is your job and you might end up with a grown-up job one day that doesn’t allow you to use your personal devices at your leisure.

This. My son did not have a phone until 8th grade and then initially only a dumb phone. But didn’t really matter since you could surf the web endlessly on the chrome books. Especially now they dumped goguardian. I’m not sure what the answer is and I’m not opposed to the ban concept, I just don’t think it’s likely to change very much. But maybe I’ll be oleasantly surprised. I’d let the teachers vote on it, if it were up to mez

I know my kid uses it in class. We montitor it. Sometimes to text us something important, sometimes teachers have them do something on it and sometimes goofing off. Focus on your own kid and stop demanding others do what you want as you don't want to parent yours.

Most kids could get around go guardian. It was better than nothing but MCPS has priorities and its not the students.
