Cell phone ban in schools

Exactly but we had more than two bomb threats, gas leaks and other things. Plus schools need to put in pay phones.

Your kids are sitting in class texting you during a bomb threat and has leak? Really?

If your kid has a phone only for an emergency, there's no reason a teacher should ever see it in class.

You can reach a therapist during the day.

Keep in their backpack. Not out in the desk where they constantly message, play games, and watch videos. Your kid is using the phone for entertainment, not communication with you. At the very least be a decent parent and turn on use restrictions to a few hours a day. But also be aware kids will try to download videos and watch things off line to get around your restrictions. You need to be responsible and double check their use. Don’t be the lazy parent who accepts every lie form their kid or order to avoid conflict and be their friend.

You make a lot of assumptions. I am not a lazy parent and those just wanting to ban phones are. My kids are in a lot of activities and other things. They don’t have a lot of down time. Maybe yours do so it’s an issue.

They have a lot of activities during class?!

You’re not only a lazy parent but one who is failing to give your kids real life skills and instead rely on always being attached to mommy by phone

How do your kids with no phone contact you without a pay phone when they need picked up later, plans change, etc. you must have little ones or are a lazy parent who makes the kids figure it out, which is someone decent like me driving your kids too because you are too selfish. Yes, I expect a text or call if my kid needs picked up later or plans change.

Your kids are changing after school plans in the middle of class?

This is anxiety and fantasy talk, not real life.

Next year I am going to make it clear that if you have a cell phone/airpods in front of you it will reduce any extra benefits from me. No extended deadlines, no open note. tests, no extra time to finish up assignments the next day. A phone out during an exam will result in a zero. I am done dealing with kids playing games, messaging friends all class, watching videos etc. and then claiming they need more time after doing very crappy incomplete work that doesn’t get submitted.

If you see personal tech during class, send the kids to the principal's office. Make your principal do their job .

Are you kidding? 3/4 of the class would be sent to the principal’s office.

+2 So many parents just have no idea what’s going on in their child’s classroom. Especially after elementary school.

Are you really that clueless. The schools are evacuated.

And teachers ask kids to use phone as a calculator, take pictures of the boards and as an id to get in the school.

Understood, but there is a big difference between a kid pulling out a phone while switching classes to send a quick text vs. sitting on their desks all day long. Put them in their backpacks and if there is a bomb threat or active shooter, pull them out. No one will get in trouble for that. But that is not how kids are using their phones 99.9% of the time. There is a happy medium--plenty of schools set parameters that work for everyone involved.

They can do most of it on their Chromebook. Phones are just an excuse by parents. You complain here while using your phone.

No - they texted me saying the school was evacuated, police were there, and had I heard anything? My kid’s phone is put away during class (confirmed by teachers during conferences), but I want them to have a way to reach us during emergencies.

That’s fine. When most people mean cell phone bans they mean students should not be using them in class unless teachers asks them to.

That sounds reasonable but not sure it's really necessary. I mean I don't care if some kids watch tik tok instead of paying attention. That's their problem. I use parental controls on my kids phones to ensure they can't do that kind of thing during school hours. Why should the county be forced to parent for people who are too lazy to bother?

Call the office if you need to get a message to your kid. What do you think your mom did when she needed to reach you?
