This didn’t happen during the first Trump administration. Elon et al. don’t play nice and will get on everybody’s nerves and will be let go and it will be business as usual, again.

Good or bad, it isn't the same people running Trump in the second administration.

Obama was the least generous to federal employees. Full stop.

Obama had to deal with the aftermath of the great recession and sequestration. His hands were tied. The 2010 midterm election was a rout.

A pay raise that “almost keeps up” is a tiny pay cut, no? I would have made very different decisions had I understood that my Federal career would be twenty years, so far, years of annual pay raises that “almost” or “don’t by a long shot” keep up with inflation.

Have other careers kept up this poorly or is it just us?

It’s just us.

My private sector DH got 4% this year. So I don’t think many employers are fully keeping up with inflation. However, 2% with everything going on is pitiful.

Highest health insurance premium increase in recent history (average of 13.5%), on top of 8% inflation, and an incoming administration that talks nonstop about how much they hate us and want us to lose our jobs. Oh and possible increased commuting expenses.

I think Trump/DOGE are going to meet their goal of getting a lot of Feds to leave. Sorry to the American public that the best performers are going to leave and not be replaced.

I think they need to go after oldies that are sucking up and poor performers.

You are quite ageist, and are you expecting to die young yourself. How tragic, or maybe not.

I love oldies but don't like how they stay in federal positions and not perform. More than 80% of the oldies at my agency are just chillin or barely doing their jobs. What do you say about that? Have some self-respect and stop sucking the tit.

Your anecdotal data isn’t worth much.

Dp, fed manager here, confirming the same experience with oldies generally being terrible performers. 80% is pretty consistent with my experience, too.

His hands weren’t tied. He could have given raises but did not. He was a giant weenie on this. There is a large cohort of feds hired during that time who will never catch up because of that time period. The best of them have left the government.

In the private and non-profit sector, lots of people haven’t seen raises for a while. DH’s company laid people off and he hasn’t had a raise in years while our insurance premium skyrocketed. His flat salary factoring in inflation and insurance is a huge pay cut from pre-2020. It just feels very entitled and gets under my skin when people complain about small raises. At least they’re raises! Focus on what the govt does provide. Job security. Flex hours. Great health insurance. A pension. My govt relatives are in great shape for retirement. I’ve been trying to move to govt for the last year myself.

Your “data” are entirely anecdotal and selective. In the DMV personal and household incomes have been rising at close to 5% a year pretty consistently for the last decade. Federal raises haven’t, at all. It’s not “entitled” to point this out, repeatedly, because it is the truth and it is a problem. If it gets under your skin, that’s your issue and we don’t need to hear it.

I have encouraged DC to stay away from public service. It's neither well rewarded or appreciated. If DC wants to be a do-gooder career wise, DC should make money in the private sector first and then turn to public service in late 40's or early 50's.

I agree with this. Joined the feds in my late 30s but … It actually paid better than private. My do-gooder private sector jobs were not lucrative but centered on non-profit work.

You are right, he could have given raises and slashed the number of federal jobs.

I’m a manager and the best performer in my office is in his 50s. The worst is in his early 30s. The younger one has a poor work ethic and just isn’t as bright. Overall, I’d say that it’s a mixed bag, but there are definitely weak younger employees in my group.

In my part of the civil service, which is filled with STEM grad degrees, really the biggest issue is the GS-15 pay cap.

There really ought to be an entirely different pay system for STEM.

Hoping other people have to go to a food bank is definitely something well-adjusted people do.
