+1. Is this really over the career center? How petty.

Yes and a difference of belief in how to be a good school board member. Mary wants to ask questions. She thinks it's ok for members to disagree. The others don't. If you don't fall in line and do what you're told, this is what happens. The community should be making a HUGE fuss about this. Or STFU forever when you wonder why the school board doesn't "do it's job," and "hold APS accountable." This is why, and Mary is trying to do just that. If you want her to keep doing that, speak up. If you like the status quo of a do-nothing board, then stay quiet I guess.

A couple things: why does being chair even matter? It seems like a titular/honorary thing that’s surface only. You still just have one vote. I think it’s wrong to block anyone, and it seems petty AF, but also like it’s not important either in terms of how the board functions or acts. And lastly, it has ALWAYS bothered me that they expect to vote as a block. That’s back from when NVD ruled the SB with her iron fist and expected unanimity and called other members dumb on a hot mic. It’s wrong and anti democratic. You can disagree, in private, and in public. It’s a democracy, and it’s what we should expect from our elected leaders. This whole idea that if you’re in the party you can only vote a certain way that someone else has determined is really not very cool, and really subverts the idea of an elected board who represents the people. This has been true for the CB as well. It really doesn’t sit well with me, at all. And I’m a faithful D voter. I sat out the most recent SB caucus, because of “inside” stuff like this. It’s disgusting actually.

NVD didn't rule the board with an iron fist. Barbara did, and this comes from her influence.

Many people have confirmed it's the actual story, there are just others who are trying very hard to deny it.

Whether they confirmed it or not, they still don't know (or aren't telling us) the actual story which is why they don't want her to become chair. No one is going to believe something because random people on the internet insist it is true without giving more details.

Check the AEM OP's post update. I don't know if I'm allowed to screen shot so I will summarize:

Bethany will vote for herself and skip over Mary
MT expressed vague support for Mary, but she didn't commit to vote for Mary either
Cristina and David won't respond which speaks volumes
Mary is trying to stay above all of this, but she wants the chair role, she is ready to serve and is NOT voluntarily stepping aside.

Why isn't APE sending a letter or getting it in the news? Maybe Miranda is also part of this little coup. She didn't commit to voting for Mary!

It did make the news last time they tried to pull this -

+1 Her and MT have been the only ones doing that at the last meetings. Very disappointed in BZS. I had hopes that the three of them could really steer APS on right track. Hopeful Kathleen will be the third vote on the dream team. (MT trolls flame away but I think both her and Mary are very good and responsive.)

+1 Really disappointed in Bethany. Even more so that she's part of the effort to pass over Mary.

Then tell her! Maybe Bethany will listen to her constituents. She should if she plans to run again. This makes her look awful and people will remember.

I’m sure Babs did this, too, but NVD was absolutely about arguing behind closed doors and then coming out with a unanimous vote and called RG an idiot on a hot mic, animosity because he wouldn’t do that. It’s crap. The thing passed, even without her vote , so what’s the big deal?

Gross. ACDC is so messed up.

AEM does not constitute public outrage. Most Arlington voters probably haven't even heard of it. If the people supporting Mary want to have a chance of stopping this coup, they need to make the greater public aware. If ArlNow can cover the dumb WGCC thing, I'm sure they would cover this. Also, Mary isn't doing herself any favors now by being silent. She won't speak up, but wants to be chair. That tactic gets you passed over.

I don't disagree. I'm not in her inner circle, although I like her, respect her work and approach, and really would like to see her as the chair. I also really do not like these sneaky tactics. They are undemocratic and not in anyone's best interest. Punishing a member for asking questions and daring to dissent? We should all be up in arms over this.

The big deal is they wanted it to pass without a dissent. That way no one can call them out later when it goes wrong. They would have cover.

It matters a lot, the board chair sets the agenda. It's their opportunity to get their priorities addressed. So skipping over Mary is a big deal. It silences her.

Isn’t the agenda set by the needs and priorities of APS, which are determined by the school administrators? It’s not like she could decide, hey, we’re not going to focus on reading this year and then it wouldn’t be taught, or we’re not going to build that new Career Center after all. Can you explain exactly how the chairs “sets the agenda?”

Barbara K tried to pull this and look how things turned out for her. She's a joke who isn't going anywhere.

That's not because she tried to pull a similar coups. She just wasn't ever going to go anywhere.

Can't wait to see how all these MK-for-chair supporters react when the same thing happens to MT in a few years.

NVD did not tolerate dissension and was publicly much ruder.
