What is the obsession with UVA for out of staters?

Anonymous
My kid is from CA and obsessed with UVA. I doubt she’ll get in, but she likes the traditional culture and work hard/play hard ethos. Plus, UVA has excellent programs and it sets you up well if you want to establish yourself on the east coast. She will also apply to UCLA/Berkeley, but she’s not enthused about staying in-state, and they’re difficult to get into.

UMD just broke into T50 this year for the first time in history, while UVA has been T25 for decades.

Berkeley is way better than UVA.

Vandy, CMU, Michigan and UNC are peers of UVA.

For in-state VA students, UVA is much harder to get into than Michigan or UNC.

For OOS students, I am not surprised that Michigan or UNC is more favored, given UVA's ridiculous OOS tuition.

It was seen as a big step up from College Park.

Michigan is more a peer of Berkeley than UVA. It has strengths across disciplines that UVA could only dream of.

Michigan is just as expensive, if not more, than UVA for OOS.

Uh, UVA made T24 this year of all institutions in the U.S. and no. 5 for public universities. UMD is far behind

Michigan on par with Berkeley? are you kidding?

UC Berkeley is a world-renowned institution. Not sure how many people outside US have ever heard of Michigan. I meant the University of Michigan, not the State of Michigan.

Well, Michigan is truly better than Cal if we talk about football, and Tom Brady!

Actually The University of Michigan is highly ranked in all international polls. It’s UVA that’s a no show among the elite. Thus my original point that Michigan is much more of a peer to Cal than UVA is to Michigan. Not that complicated to understand

Michigan is also a world-renowned university. UVA is not in the same league as either Berkeley of Michigan.

Not completely true.
I’m from TX and UVA was a very sought-after school. More than just a “good public” university. My brother’s kids just graduated hs in last few years and lots of their friends considered and/or applied to UVA but would never have applied to VTech even though it’s arguably a “good public school” too. UVA has recognition that other good public’s in VA don’t have.

My kid graduated from TJ last year. Many of her classmates withdrew their Michigan applications immediately after getting into UVA through EA.

But none of them dropped their UC Berkeley or UCLA applications.

For your information, UVA's EA decision was announced much earlier than Michigan's RD decision.

At least for high-stats kids, they do not think Michigan is comparable to UCLA, let alone UC Berkeley.
