You seem to leave out that the previous HOS house, on campus, was entirely full of books as it was being used as a storage space while the new library is being built. There was no choice except to put the new HOS elsewhere. The house she's in now was already owned by the school (like many on that street) and being used as a rental so it needed upgrades to work for entertaining. The backyard is adjacent to the school's grounds. The annual donor event is open to anyone donating $5k or more -- it even states that on the invitation. |
Dp. The old house became the library only after PE asserted she didn't want to live there. That's fine. Still I think it's important to track the costs of her choices and balance against her fundraising. Are there benefits to her leadership? |
If taht's true, then where were they going to put all the books instead of that old house? The learning commons project was planned years before the new HOS, and they had to do something with all those books and other materials. |

Lol - All three division heads, the head of DEI, 2 TWO(!!!) Directors of Communication. Plus numerous other staff that worked with her. Yeah totally normal.
It is very clear that anyone working directly with Penny suffers. She is an abusive and vindictive leader. The school is great despite her terrible leadership. I hope she leaves before she changes what is great about Holton. By sitting silently, the Board has reneged on its duty. I know teachers and staff will now suffer from a tantrum because of this thread, and I'm sorry to contribute to it for that reason. But how else are concerned members of the community supposed to express concerns? +1 |
Perhaps in the other unrenovated house where Penny now lives? Would have saved the cost of that renovation. |
He was involved with the bogus lifeguard training class at Kenwood, right? Any chance he was asked to leave? https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2024/07/17/red-cross-certification-revoked/ |
If I were a crisis comms firm, this is exactly what I would do. Look for a way to deflect blame from the HOS and smear departing administrators. Nevermind the fact that he’s currently looking for a new job and was beloved at the school, a place he called home for nearly 30 years. This is such a shameful tactic. Seriously, shame on you. |
+1 pathetic |
He is beloved. Anyone who knows independent schools knows it’s a bad look to lose 3 top administrators in less than 12 months. It would demonstrate a shocking level of incompetence to arrange this intentionally. Even unintentionally, it’s rather breathtaking. I’m reminded of the quote from Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest” - "To lose one [division director], may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose [three] looks like carelessness". Or perhaps, if not carelessness, malice? |
At the end of the day, these are jobs. The college my son goes to got a new president and then over the next year several top administrators left because you know what -- they are like us -- they want to move up or do something else, or yes, maybe they don't like their new boss. Shocking, I know, when we think these school administrators work for us. It's a job to them like anyone else and sometimes we leave. Get over it. The amount of complaining about private schools on this thread is tiresome. If you don't like what they teach, or the food, or the fact that walls weren't painted, or that they ask for donations (which every private school does from parents), or whatever, then you know what -- leave. You have that choice. |
|
We do care about the school. We are not leaving. |
Don’t doubt he is beloved or that Holton is in an administrative crisis. But he and his sister were involved in administering a lifeguarding class that did not meet Red Cross standards for years and finally got caught. Shame on both of them. |
+1 Why do they need two directors of communication? Seems excessive. Plus not sure there needs to be an entire DEI staff at these schools when many of these privates are having to cut back in other areas because of budget shortages. Many of the DEI programs can be run by other departments as shared responsibitlies. If money was endless I would say absolutely have a full time DEI head plus staff but money is tight at many schools and they are being forced to cut in other areas. |

PE went through two people in the role in less than a year! I assure you that there is no shortage of funds with a half million dollar renovation of her home. |
