Native Washingtonian here with many fond memories of Farrells. I now live in CA, we have them here! |
I had no idea they still existed!!! This makes me so happy! |
And now I’m depressed again. Last one closed in 2019: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farrell%27s_Ice_Cream_Parlour |
Seriously? I've lived here all my life in (MoCo) and I've never heard anyone call themselves a Washingtonian. |
I’ve lived here my entire life as well and it’s all I have ever heard. Ward 8 born and raised. |
I mean, I can see someone who actually lives in Washington DC calling themselves that but I guarantee you, very few from Montgomery County would call themselves a Washingtonian. On the other hand most people will say, I live in the DC area or the DC suburbs. |
A Washingtonian is only someone who lives in D.C. If you live in Maryland, you’d be a Marylander. |
Um, that’s good! Since no one from Montgomery County actually IS a Washingtonian. I’m a 3rd generation DC native. I’ve rarely heard anyone say Washingtonian unless they were referring to the magazine. My mom and her age group often referred to themselves as being from The District. I usually say that I’m “from DC” unless I’m in an environment where that might be confusing, then I’d say “I’m from Washington — Washington, DC”. I grew up in Petworth and my mom grew up in Columbia Heights — so maybe there are micro-regional / neighborhood differences? |
That's my point. I was responding to the PP who was making the claim that calling oneself a Washingtonian sounds like someone from Bethesda or Arlington would do. And I disagree. No one in Maryland (not sure about VA) would ever call themselves that. |
Born |
Only if you're incapable of nuance. We moved to DC when I was 3 and I'm now 50 years old. Except for leaving for college and grad school, I've lived in DC and do considered myself a Washingtonian (Ward 3--and yes, this is the term we used). OTOH, someone who was born in DC but has spent the majority of her life in Baltimore would not be a Washingtonian. |
Born and raised, still here..... |
You’d be a native Washingtonian. Anyone born elsewhere but residing in the District is a Washingtonian. Simply not a native. |
| Swensen's! Wasn't Mr. San Francisco one of their sundaes? I loved going there as a kid. |

I’m also confused by this thread. It says “become a Washingtonian” in the title. But there’s three groups responding.
1. I’m a Washingtonian because I was born here. That’s the criteria. I was born here, Colombia hospital for women, woodys, blah blah 2. I went to Georgetown and partied. The tombs, etc. 3. I’m a transplant but this is how I know I’m a Washingtonian now. I can navigate rock creek parkway. THIS SEEMS TO BE WHAT THE THREAD IS ASKING BUT WHAT DO I KNOW. |
