I mean, I can see someone who actually lives in Washington DC calling themselves that but I guarantee you, very few from Montgomery County would call themselves a Washingtonian. On the other hand most people will say, I live in the DC area or the DC suburbs.  [/quote]

Um, that’s good!  Since no one from Montgomery County actually IS a Washingtonian.  
I’m a 3rd generation DC native.  I’ve rarely heard anyone say Washingtonian unless they were referring to the magazine.  My mom and her age group often referred to themselves as being from The District. I usually say that I’m “from DC” unless I’m in an environment where that might be confusing, then I’d say “I’m from Washington — Washington, DC”.

I grew up in Petworth and my mom grew up in Columbia Heights — so maybe there are micro-regional / neighborhood differences?
