What the hell happened to JD Vance?

Yes, Barack is the same profile. Both he and JD were plotting their political trajectories from their law school days and got some critical early help from older boosters. In JD's case, it was primarily Amy Chua and Peter Thiel that help propel him forward. For Barack it was the likes of Abner Mikva, Emil Jones and Valerie Jarrett.

JD has clearly been obsessed with politics since he was a teen. The fake military box checking. Majored in poli sci at OSU. Interned for politicians at OSU. Job at AEI. Guy is a lifelong wormy schemer who was trying to build the perfect resume.

He has no charm or charisma.

He has flip flopped from calling Trump "Hitler" and "an opiod" a few years back to endorsing him as president and vouching for all his policies.

Buttigieg clocked Vance in a short 2 minute soundbite by highlighting Vance's notorious opportunistic nature: "I knew a lot of people like him when I got to Harvard," Buttigieg says. "I found a lot of people like him who would say whatever they needed to get ahead. And five years ago, that seemed like being the anti-Trump Republican, so that's what he was that."

Buttigieg highlights more of Vance's former harsh criticism of Trump. "[Vance] Called him an opioid, which is kind of a weird thing to say about a person. But I mean, for someone whose identity is that they're connected to Appalachia, which has an opioid crisis, that really is the darkest thing you could possibly say about Donald Trump, at least in public. Behind the scenes, apparently he's actually calling him Hitler, right?"

The crowd laughs, but Buttigieg is sure to clarify he's not being hyperbolic, adding a "seriously" there at the end.

Utterly savage. This needs to be Mayor Pete’s full time job.

Pete speaking to anyone's authenticity is hilarious. HE was one of those types "at Harvard". Ridiculous projection.

At least Pete had the stones to come out of the closet. When will JD?

Here we have a bunch of hypocrites moaning that anyone would dare speak on the bedroom of the Democratic candidate and then coming out with crap like this?

Well done...

Please share all the girlfriends JD had before he was introduced to his now wife in his late 20s by two creepy law professors. And please tell us why a “Conservative” guy personally sought out, worked for, and is the beneficiary of a degenerate gay billionaire who keeps boy toys on the side, one of which committed suicide last year.

Yes, correct. Barack was a wayward pothead, but really put the scheming into gear at HLS.

This type of stuff is so idiotic. If anyone dare speculate about Corey Booker's sexuality or bring up the Bathhouse Barry rumors you would be apoplectic.

You are engaging in the same gutter behavior, you hypocrite.

His wife was a Gates Cambridge Scholar, then attended Yale Law and is a successful lawyer. In his book, he criticized Fox.

Now he’s on Twitter rambling about illegal immigrants and yada yada.

If you hate him so much why are you on his twitter?

But he's quite ambitious and made the political calculus a while ago that the National Review brand of conservatism was not a viable path for his political fortunes. He can be thoughtful and nuanced (and some of his writings reflect this, even if you do not agree with him), but nobody is buying that these days, especially with the specter of Trumpism looming. He's had to walk back a number of his anti-Trump opinions in order to try to carve out a niche. This is the calculus that has been made, but it does not appear to be working.

Look at Asha Rangappa, who was at YLS at the same time as JD and is now a twitter warrior. These things happen when visibility, attention, ambition, scrutiny and brand-building enter the mix.

As evidenced by Ted Cruz at the SCOTUS confirmation hearings recently, you would be surprised (or perhaps not) by the number of esteemed, venerable people who are completely obsessed with their twitter mentions and the concomitant attention high. Sign of the times.

Why did he need to be in politics to begin with? I don't see how he is even a good fit, he is extremely unlikable.

He didn't. But he's ambitious. This type for person doesn't think about "good fit" or "needs of the country" before jumping into politics, they just go for it to satiate their thirst for acclaim, status, notoriety, power, relevance etc. Not an uncommon profile for YLS.

Yes, but politics is still a more natural fit for some than others. Clinton likes being around people. So does Trump. Obama is more of a professor type, but still very likable.

Vance looks desperate. He comes across as a low class striver with a chip on his shoulder. I can't tell who is supposed to be his constituency.

I take your point, but JD was reportedly likable at YLS. I guess he's still figuring out his political brand and style. He hasn't been in politics that long. When Obama was at the point where he had been in politics this long, he was being chided by Mikva, Wright and other advisors to change his speaking style because the know it all professor act wasn't going to cut it or endear him to voters.

I don’t understand what’s wrong with having goals and working to achieve them. Plenty of people know what they want to do as a career and set long term goals for himself. And then step by step they make decisions and position themselves to obtain the end. I am not a Vance fan but insulting him because he had childhood goals to get into politics is lame. Plenty of people have these goals.

Because why choose politics as a career? It almost always requires great sacrifices of personal integrity.

DP. In an ideal world, you want authentic servant leaders in politics. Not politics in service of ego. Of course, we don't live in an ideal world though and this is rarely the case.

It's always good when a politician has a good answer to "what do I hope to achieve by entering politics and is politics the best way to achieve it?". For many of the ambitious types, being in politics is the end itself, not the means. Such character types are capable of anything, because ambition and notoriety, rather than service and principles, are the animating factors behind their engagement in politics.

Yeah. This is what I don’t get. I guess the base didn’t read his book? Because they complain about liberal elites looking down on them. But most of us don’t have a NYT best seller devoted to doing so.
