The fact is that Northwood expansion will do more for DCC overcrowding than Woodward will and just going down the numbers it’s unlikely that Woodward will accommodate more than 500 DCC students when it opens and that number will need to decline over time as more housing gets built in North Bethesda, which the county not only plans to do buy is also prioritizing.

Woodward will help with DCC overcrowding indirectly by dealing with overcrowding in MCPS in general. Some people sem to have this fantasy that their boundaries will remain in tact while those poor DCC kids will be bused across the county to Woodward. This will never happen. Woodward's boundaries will be carved out of those from the adjacent schools and those will also be adjusted. This cascade of adjustments can be used to help with overcrowding as it propagates through the boundaries. The county could save a ton of money on transportation by making more sensible boundaries; for example, is it Wootten that has the long narrow boundary where the school is at the far end and a separate island off to the north? People who literally live across the street from Wootten, Einstein or Blair don't attend those schools. In the case of Blair, I get it since there are no high-schools in the SE part of the county, but there others border on ridiculous.

I know this is going to burst the whole fantasy you have going on, but the closest HS to Woodward are WJ obviously, and wait for it…..Einstein, then Wheaton and BCC are each the same distance to Woodward.

I don't think that bursts their bubble at all since they were saying Woodward will draw from those schools adjacent to it. This makes perfect sense. Their boundaries will be adjusted to help offset overcrowding at schools adjacent to them and so on.

Makes sense to me. By reducing overcrowding at the schools adjacent to Woodward they can help reduce overcrowding at all schools not just Einsten and WJ.

And, even if it is made a DCC school, it will not change the fact that those living close to it will be "in-boundary" and have first priority. My guess is that it would be basically at capacity immediately and be like Blair, where effectively nobody can lottery in.

Is Woodward located downcounty like inside the beltway?

None of the DCC high schools are located inside the Beltway.

Then why do they call them down county when they're not? What high school service people living inside the beltway?

BCC and Whitman are inside the Beltway. WJ is very close to the Beltway. Blair is very close to the Beltway.

Within the DCC, Blair, Northwood, and Einstein all have boundaries extending inside the Beltway all the way to the DC line, even though the school buildings themselves are outside the Beltway.

Or just reading the actual stated purpose of the re-opening of Woodward Northwood is definitely going to help with Blair’s overcrowding issue but Einstein is just as overcrowded as WJ and Blair.

They aren't going to worry as much about Einstein or Blair as much as WJ and mid-county schools. Lets be real.

What does that even mean?

I’m going to guess this person believes that Bethesda will be prioritized over everything else and that at some point the BOE will say sorry DCC we know we said all along we were going to include the DCC in the Woodward planning but you know these Bethesda kids really just need the extra space, keep on keepin on in your portable classrooms! 20 years ago, that probably would have happened, but I don’t see that happening now in today’s climate, and given the perception of the W schools vs the other schools in the county.

With covid, I'd rather have my kids in a portable. In this situation, given the location it makes sense to prioritize Bethesda and I don't want my kids bused or have to drive them cross town for a school that isn't any better than what we have nearby.

Since Woodward isn’t re-opening until 2025, the COVID situation will obviously be different and hopefully a non issue. People clearly have different perspectives, I went to a private school (not in the DMV) that was 15 miles away from my house and was legitimately across town, I took a bus to and from school until I could drive and it was not an issue. The ridiculous overcrowding however does bother me, if there is a brand new high school 4 miles away I will pick that every time over an overcrowded school that is cramming kids into portables.

The difference is it was your choice to commute. 15 miles in one area can mean 15 minutes. Here 4 miles can mean 20-40 minutes.

These schools will be crowded regardless of opening up one more school. Its not going to make a huge difference either way. When MCPS is remodeling school and doing additions they need to plan for 500 kids over their projection and not just current numbers.

Its not about inside or outside the beltway. These schools are down county. WJ and Woodard are very close to each other and mid-county.

I don't know that any of these labels really matter. Wheaton and Kennedy are both further north than either WJ or Woodward, or Whitman or BCC. And the middle of the county would be somewhere near Magruder.

But but Bethesda kids can’t be attending schools that are referred to as down county, it will hurt the brand 🙄
