How did Herndon/Westfield HS go from top to bottom?

Langley and Herndon share a long boundary.

So Herndon declined because they share a boundary with Langley.

It certainly didn't help Herndon's reputation when hundreds of Langley parents filled Forestville ES in June 2019 and told Janie Strauss their lives would be ruined if their kids had to attend Herndon.

"[O]ne audience member began to argue with the representative that the county’s “One Fairfax” policy might harm communities like Great Falls, if the mission was to “simply diversify,” and attempt to “fix failures in other school pyramids at our expense.”

One Fairfax was adopted jointly by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and the FCPS Board in 2017, committing both boards to consider equity in decision-making and in the development and delivery of future policies, programs and services.

'You’re retiring,' shouted out one individual. 'How can we even believe you? You have nothing to lose.'

Some parents expressed concern that Langley students might be forced to move to other schools like Herndon High School. Strauss reiterated her statement that 'no one is being asked to move from Langley, busing is not a consideration. Breaking up the school or busing students doesn’t make any sense'.”

So, some posters on DCUM think that students currently going to Langley--and whose families want them to go to Langley--should be removed from a school that is NOT overcrowded and sent to a school that would be overcrowded if they were sent there.
Please tell me how that makes sense.

Wow. You are completely bout of touch with the dynamics. Herndon parents could give a flying f* about where Langley / McLean / GF kids go. They do resent swipes that suggest the snowflakes in those communities would be irreparably damaged by being sent to Herndon. It is classist and insulting. Herndon HS is a good school.

PP you responded to here. I was responding the the italicized post. You did not answer the question. I never said Herndon was not a good school. I just wanted to know why the poster wants people who want to stay in their current school to move--especially when Herndon is close to capacity. It makes no sense.

Way to double down on the tone deafness. We know how the Langley parents behaved at that Forestville meeting in 2019. There was no actual proposal to move any kids from Langley to Herndon at the time, but still you demanded a meeting with Janie Strauss to tell her how unacceptable it would be if it ever were proposed. It’s bad enough that it’s so entitled, but it’s even worse when you trash other schools in the process.

Who cares. The boundary didn’t change and no one in Herndon has to sit next to parents from GF at games (for high school sports. Some of us have kids on the same club teams and this DCUM snipes aren’t a factor)

PP isn't referring to a discussion on DCUM. They are referring to how Langley parents behaved in a public meeting.

Even better that the boundary didn’t change if GF parents are so annoying.

We don't much want their kids in our schools but rewarding bad behavior also seems wrong.

Rewarding bad behavior?

Bad = boorish, annoying, entitled, obnoxious, heavy-handed, overweening, dismissive, insulting (by some GF parents)

So, you think that it is okay to do a boundary redistricting because a handful of parents acted boorish?

It isn't about their behavior. It's mostly about the principle of it all. FCPS is a public school system. FCPS should not be swayed from making any decision based on personal real estate investments, which we all know is what the GF community primarily cares about. The fact that the FCPS school board is in fact influenced by these factors is a shame.

The direct implication is that not being boundaried to Herndon is desirable.

My prediction is that the boundary between Herndon and Langley will change in the fairly near future. Some of the homes zoned currently for Langley will be reassigned to Herndon High School, including some homes in Great Falls.

Some families will send their children to Herndon and some will not, like every other high school.

Life will go on, except some people will complain about the percentage of people in GF zoned for Herndon who send their children to private (which will be based on pure speculation)

Of course, they shouldn't. Neither should the SB make a decision to shift kids because the SB does not like the demographics.

The bottom line:
Langley is underenrolled.
Herndon is at capacity.

Why would you move kids for no reason?

Elaine Tholen is just awful. When she announced her candidacy for School Board, she set up a web page that highlighted her support of One Fairfax.

Langley yelled at her that One Fairfax meant moving GF kids to Herndon and she scrubbed her site within a week to remove any reference to One Fairfax.

And dranesville signaled that it was fine by voting for her.

Let’s all cry about that.

Remember, Omeish's interview? She certainly gave Langley parents reason to think that was the point of One Fairfax.
