FCYBL-is this allowed?

My kid is in 5th grade first division. I hope he isn't playing any secret AAU teams that practice and play together year round. His team has kids who have never even played in a league before.

He’s definitely playing against some AAU players. Many AAU players will do both if their schedule allows. Not sure about entire teams though.

Part of what makes FCYBL what it is is that it's regional and you can only try out for the team(s) your zip code feeds into. Otherwise what a mess it will be; kids driving all over the county to try out and play for different teams, aggressive parents and coaches will create super teams -- not as much fun at all. For those who want that experience, there's AAU.

Apparently kids are driving from centreville and chantilly to practice for McLean twice a week. Can’t imagine doing that all winter.

I know a couple kids who are probably on that team and not Centreville an Chantilly, but probably Reston and Fairfax. The part of Fairfax could be considered Chantilly, but with a Fairfax address.

My kid played on a bunch of AAU teams, and all of those players, coaches and parents would have been mortified at the idea of playing as a team in a county rec/select league. For this team to choose to play in that league and then lose is hilarious.

To be fair, the winning team is the combination of two AAU teams: Nova Cavs and Nova 94 orange team. McLean A is Nova 94 white team. Go figure out yourself.

And not only that. The most skilled players from the McLean team play 13u AAU. In the 7th grade county league, a kid can be 14u.

This must be that guy and McLean must have said yes. Since Concepcion wasn't an existing McLean parent, he didn't have any loyalty to the existing McLean families and saw that having a winning amazing team would be great for his side business of basketball training. OK, this is making sense now.

The coach you are talking about was just trying to find a team for his son. This guy coaches CYA AAU’s A team and is affiliated with about 5 other AAU organizations so he knows a lot of kids who can play. The problem was that CYA has a “good ol boy network” and they don’t select the best players for their teams. The 7th grade travel coach has cut players from Nova94 Orange and the PBYL to get kids on the team who are basically “house league” level players.

Of course the type of players getting cut are going to have options. And other serious players and coaches will be turned off by such the practices of the CYA travel teams coaching. Now, You have a CYA AAU A team head coach who doesn’t even want his kid playing with CYA Travel. And I’m sure it’s probably the CYA parents making the most noise about what’s going on. Address the politics over at CYA, before you try to stir up a bunch of it in the FCBYL. If you don’t want the teams to suck and would like to win games, deal with the situation at home.

My kid plays AAU for a 2026 team (8th grade) and lives in Mclean.

Our 2027 team had played the Nova 94/Mclean Select Team before.
Total BS. Most kids in that team do not live in Mclean. Total BS for local kids not getting a chance to play Select A or B.

Keep your AAU team out of FCYBL.

If they want real competition, play Marquee or Made hoops or other tourney. For an AAU team to play FCYBL which is a joke. Shame on the coach for even doing this and Mclean for allowing it. My son did not even try out as the completion level in FCYBL is not high enough. Most of his buddies went to PYBL or just played AAU through winter season.

Its not rec. It is travel basketball.

Consider it Rec plus…..still better than house league.

True travel is grass roots or AAU.
Top local kids play in PYBL, not FCYBL.

Google it…

My kid plays for a AAU team that sounds like “Curant”. We would be absoluty ashamed of ourselves if we had to play in a local basketball league when we play teams from NY, Philly,Jersey week in and week out at tournamts. FCYBL would be too low of completion.. our team would blow out every team by 30-50. Most of our kids end up D1 at the 17u level…

The AAu teams playing FCYBL are non-circuit local teams. Consider them tier 3 AAU teams playing local completion. That’s all they can win at.

Most of the kids who are serious about basketball play with AAU teams. As long as these kids are in the correct grade and correct zip code (minus 2), they are eligible. Embrace the competition or go back to house league.

I am not sure how the league can deal fairly with the issue of two kinds of teams: teams that play together year round and then figure out a way in to the FCYBL based on zip code exceptions, and local league teams that try out in October and just start playing together in November each year.

His son (your son?) tried out for CYA 7th grade travel. Are you saying he didn't make the CYA team and so had to happen to scrounge something up involving his entire AAU team playing for McLean in the FCYBL?

I mean, its still travel basketball, not rec/house. Every sport has tiers for travel. I believe you that AAU or PYBL has better players, but you do sound a little obnoxious when you call something "rec plus".

Well, if its more than just the coach's kid and the kid who lives in Centreville---then they have too many out-of-zip kids.

I think my son's team played your team this weekend. My son and several of his teammates play together on an AAU team. Your coach (that young guy) was a nightmare and really hard on the kids. If his team doesn't know how to break a press, that's on him and his coaching. Its too bad because there was definitely some talent on your son's team, its just so obviously a group of kids who have only played rec. And frankly, too small a team size-wise to compete in D1. Hope the rest of the season goes better!
