| After seeing other practices and the skill development at other clubs, particularly when it comes to passing, we decided to leave VYS a year ago. They do a good job at herding cattle and letting athletic kids do their thing within some structure. But, if you're looking to have a kid go to the next level, U12-13 is where Vienna stops being a solid option for you. |
| Has anyone heard regarding boys U12 tryout results? |
| Yes, all the players are being replaced with kids from Brazil |
If you haven't heard by now, you're likely not going to like the result. |
Interesting. I know 2 of us waiting on U11 results too- assuming they didn’t make it which would not be surprising but also know a U10 waiting which I am definitely surprised at based on their talent, though I didn’t watch their actual tryout so it’s entirely possible it didn’t go well. |

Are the recent posters parents of kids already on the team, or kids looking to join for the first time?
I know some families are still waiting in various groups, and I suspect they may be waiting to see if some families switch clubs, which could open up slots. I’d suggest nicely emailing VYS asking about your child’s situation. I really feel for all the parents of the 2010 girls who didn’t get an offer. That is a huge birth year at VYS. |
The three I know about (one mine, two not) are all new families. That’s what I figured since I know several people notified Friday who just have a response yesterday or got extended even to today. |
Internal offers - those kids who the club definitely wants to retain - started going out on 5/6, a few hours after the first tryout. Those players were given until 5/8 to respond. Not hearing by now doesn't mean you won't be offered a spot. But the longer you wait, the further down the line you are. Dirty little secret is that Vienna is not the type of club you show up at and get a good spot. Alot of jockeying for position unless your kid is a complete standout. Wouldn't put all my eggs in one basket with Vienna. Ask another club to join a practice either now or in August. A couple of spots usually open up for some reason. Good luck. |
Not true in my experience with VYS, at least in the younger levels. My boys’ travel teams have been remarkably free of parental drama, politics, and intrigue. Maybe we just have a great group of players/parents, and I’m sure experiences vary on that front at VYS and every club. But anecdotally it seems VYS is less about “jockeying for position” and more about playing the game than many other clubs in the area. |
Your boys started at U9 didn’t they? I can tell you it is obvious to me as a new family that what this poster is saying is true. I know some boys who were already on teams last year or who have other family on travel teams who made it who are very clearly less talented that some boys that were new to tryouts who haven’t heard. Note, not talking about mine here. That said, you will be sure that my younger boy will be trying out at U9 next year as it seems easier to get in the first year, that’s for sure. |
As the parent of a VYS girl who started at U9, you are absolutely right. My DD is absolute middle of the club (middle ranked player on the middle team), and I believe if she hadn’t made it the first year, it would be much tougher to make it the 2nd or 3rd. I know some players on the bottom team below her that are super lucky to be existing players, as I really don’t think they would make the team as a new player today. That said, I do think there is something to be said for rewarding those families for several years of loyalty to the club, and, honestly, for continuing to play (and pay) during COVID. But I have to agree with you that the new players face a higher bar, and often fare better than many of the existing players once they make the team. Perhaps this is due to the limited nature of tryouts… |
Why replace an existing player/family with someone that is of equal talent or marginally better. It doesn’t make sense to possibly rock the boat for a player that won’t make much of a difference so it would make sense that they would be taking players that only standout. |
You're spot on...there is little reason to do this. Except one. Attitude. A bad apple spoils the whole bunch. Damage control would be the only legitimate reason to do this. If I find a good player with a stellar attitude, I take her / him in any way possible. |
I think it’s true that it’s very difficult for one or two 90 minute tryout sessions to really permit a club/coach to evaluate a new prospective player equally to a player that’s currently on the team and who practices 2x per week and plays a game every week. I’m not sure how one can overcome that imbalance, but it must be something that all the clubs have to figure out a way to deal with. Actually one of my boys started (with VYS) at U12; he didn’t make the top team, when maybe he should have. But we were new to the area and he was having fun playing and we just let it ride. But I guess in retrospect it’s true that he was probably good enough to play for a higher team that year, but he wasn’t good enough to crack his way into it as a new player. I’m not sure how to solve that problem. But I’ve definitely seen movement between teams at VYS, kids moving up and down the teams, so it’s definitely possible to move up once you’ve secured a place on one of the teams. |
A good scout (one aspect of coaching) can spot good players much faster and more accurately than you or I can. I most certainly would not be able to do so in a couple of ninety minute sessions. But some coaches can, although many cannot. |
