Not true in my experience with VYS, at least in the younger levels. My boys’ travel teams have been remarkably free of parental drama, politics, and intrigue. Maybe we just have a great group of players/parents, and I’m sure experiences vary on that front at VYS and every club. But anecdotally it seems VYS is less about “jockeying for position” and more about playing the game than many other clubs in the area. [/quote]

Your boys started at U9 didn’t they?  I can tell you it is obvious to me as a new family that what this poster is saying is true.  I know some boys who were already on teams last year or who have other family on travel teams who made it who are very clearly less talented that some boys that were new to tryouts who haven’t heard.  Note, not talking about mine here.  That said, you will be sure that my younger boy will be trying out at U9 next year as it seems easier to get in the first year, that’s for sure. [/quote]

As the parent of a VYS girl who started at U9, you are absolutely right. My DD is absolute middle of the club (middle ranked player on the middle team), and I believe if she hadn’t made it the first year, it would be much tougher to make it the 2nd or 3rd.

I know some players on the bottom team below her that are super lucky to be existing players, as I really don’t think they would make the team as a new player today. That said, I do think there is something to be said for rewarding those families for several years of loyalty to the club, and, honestly, for continuing to play (and pay) during COVID.

But I have to agree with you that the new players face a higher bar, and often fare better than many of the existing players once they make the team. Perhaps this is due to the limited nature of tryouts…[/quote]
