Why is it weird that a group of kids who were together were in close promixity to each other? They weren't all right together or surrounding her One was off in the background, one was on another bike, one was in front of the bikes recording, one was beside her. I don't think they were there specifically to come to his aid but because they were a group of friends together and most friend groups are close together when out in public and one friend is dealing with a situation. Where would you expect his friends to be? Do you have teens? Do you expect them to all stay far apart or scatter if one of their friends is dealing with a situation?

Honestly? I’d expect one or two of them to say, “come on man, how about you just get a different bike? If you’ve already paid for that one, redock it and get a different one and let’s get out of here. It’s not worth arguing with this lady.

Didn't one of them say "it's not worth it?" The one in the pink hoodie.

Ok. I'm just going off memory. I'm having a hard time finding the video since the one in the first page of this thread has been deleted (by the twitter user.)

There was a guy sitting on a bike looking down at his phone the majority of the time. He clearly wasn't wanting to get involved. It was unclear if he rented the bike and if it was docked or not.

At least he was being decent. I'd like the men to come forward and speak to what happened (and why the one said some of the horrific stuff he did). If they are going to ruin her life, at least be men enough (the ones who were a problem as clearly not all participated in it) to come forward and say what happened and show the receipt.

Yes, pink hoodie guy repeatedly suggest they should leave the woman alone and let her have the bike.
The other hospital employee suggests they re-dock the bike so she can rent it.
Obviously the woman thinks the bike is hers.

On the other side, the guy trying to take the bike thinks it's his.
The guy taking the video obviously doesn't want her to have it.
One or two of the other guys defends the one who wants the bike, saying "it's his bike" and telling the other hospital employee he paid for it.

Meaning about half the people in the video thing the bike is his, and half think it's hers or that she should have it. And it doesn't even break down along racial lines since one of the guys saying she should have it is black. And yet many people viewed this video and concluded she was trying to steal it and that her behavior was motivated by race.

It makes no sense. The reaction to this video is nonsensical.

No one was stealing the bike if they both thought it was theirs and perhaps it was as simple as a software issue and both did actually rent it but then he could just show her the receipt and come forward with the receipt, both apologize to each other and let it be over. She was on the bike, so just let her have it, contact customer support and let them know what happened, and rent another bike. It looked like some friends were involved and some were staying out of it but one was recording, one was grabbing the bike and another was making nasty comments to her but that could have been the person filming. It didn't seem racially motivated and she seemed if anything scared and shocked and not sure how to handle it. But, everything is targeted as racially motivated as it gets the media's attention. Someone clearly wanted their 5 minutes of fame. It's just interesting none of the men, including the man doing the right thing are coming forward to speak.

I just don't get why the one man would try to force the bike back to the dock and just not walk away, get another bike, and be done with it.

I'm a pp that believed it was NOT her bike after watching the video and reading on here.
Factors that influenced my thoughts:
1. Other posters here were saying that you could see in the video that his phone app showed that he had rented it. I've never rented a Citi bike before--so I just believed them.
2. She never actually says anything to the effect of "No, I paid for this bike."
3. At one point she actually takes his phone. And she does it very casually. It seemed logical to me that if she could casually take his phone, she could also be taking his bike.

A man is grabbing her and the bike she is on. I wouldn't expect her to think that quickly to say I paid for it or anything else. She's in flight or fight mode and trying to stay calm. She clearly wanted to verify whose bike it was but he wasn't willing to do that and was just grabbing at the bike. She clearly rented it as she provide receipts for that bike and the other bike and it can easily be proved at what time she left work, etc. with all the security camera's and everything else at the hospital. Maybe there was a glitch with the software or they both rented it. What is interesting is she produced a receipt and he hasn't spoke up or provided any receipt, which is a bit suspicious. Why not come forward, apologize for grabbing the bike and handling the situation poorly, and show your receipt and it can all be resolved easily as if they both have receipts there was a glitch in the rental system and it was no ones fault.

He didn't provide receipts either but you somehow ascertained that he was right and she was wrong. Why not just decide there wasn't enough information to make a determination. Why pick a side?

The video is his receipt.”

Question is where is this young man and where is his receipt?

In the past activists have found and gotten statements from the minorities and their families in videos like these. Their silence this time is deafening.

There was a guy sitting on a bike looking down at his phone the majority of the time. He clearly wasn't wanting to get involved. It was unclear if he rented the bike and if it was docked or not.

The pink hoodie guy does not stay uninvolved. He gets up and says a few times, its not worth it, just let her have it.

If it happened the way she said, it would make no sense to tell them she paid. Her version is that she paid and they shoved her back in to re-set/re-dock it. As someone else in this thread pointed out, that’s like telling a robber “but wait that’s my wallet!” The robber knows.

Why is it weird that a group of kids who were together were in close promixity to each other?

No, in the video she did not produce receipts. I was explaining the reasons why I had the thoughts I had after watching the video and then reading here. Not the thoughts I have about the situation now, a few days later. But looking back at my post, I realize I didn't specify that, sorry.

He didn't provide receipts either but you somehow ascertained that he was right and she was wrong. Why not just decide there wasn't enough information to make a determination. Why pick a side?

yes, and I went over those reasons in my points above.

Ok, move on from the video. She produced it later on via her attorney. She doesn’t owe that guy a receipt.

She was on the bike when he grabbed it with her on it to push it back in the dock. He should be charged with assault.
