Harris is allowing these cuts to happen. Everyone that’s currently in office should be voted out in November.

Exactly. I voted for Harris. Seeing these appalling cuts, she will not get my vote again. I like Harris but these cuts were heartless and lazy.

The county council decided the final budget amount after being told what was on the line. Blaming Harris is off target.

Blaming Harris is exactly on target. You can't argue experience when they fumbled the budget. Throw the bums out. Anyone can be taught budgeting. It's Harris's myopic unrealistic view of the school district that contributed to this mess.

Thanks Rita, you've said that before: anyone can be taught budgeting. You won't know what hit you, if you get in.

Looks like Rita was wrong, the current board clearly couldn't be taught budgeting

Y'all know that there's a whole central office department that does the budgeting, right?

https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/cfo/

Yes, but you have no right to be on the BOE unless you're a budget and financial expert according to some (unless of course you're a white middle aged mom who's put together the budget for the local PTA bake sale)

Well then, that clearly locks in Harris and Stewart! I'm sure they can tell us how many cupcakes it takes to balance the budget.

Board members aren't in charge of balancing the budget. That job falls to Brian Hull, Robert Reilly, Ivon Alfonso Windsor, and their staff.

You Lynne apologists can't have it both ways. You can't say that experience matters and that you need to know about budgets and then literally pass the buck to someone else. This is textbook cognitive dissonance.

Correct. For what it's worth, I do think Hull and his team bear the brunt of the responsibility for our current budget state, but clearly Lynne and the BOE suck in providing oversight of said budget.

Don't leave the county council and Elrich out of this. They're part of the problem.

Elrich is his own mess. But I think the council did what they were supposed to do.

They too were blindsided by the cuts that came down from MCPS 24 hours before the final vote on the budget.

Felder wrote councilmembers on April 29th that an increase in class size of one student could happen if the budget wasn't fully funded, one of several non-recommended reductions.

Oh please, not the Evan Glass faux outrage video as he tries desperately not to have any of this stink tick to him as he prepares to run for county executive. The whole damn council KNEW weeks before that teacher cuts were likely with the budget they were approving. take a look at the DCUM thread on "Cuts." The date that thread started was in April, and the first post mentions teacher cuts. And the council said it didn't know? I call BS.

Let's find out how many cupcakes it's going to take to settle this latest case. I have to believe that this guy has a history of bad behavior and that the current board was well aware of it. No one can be worse than the current board at cover ups.

DP. Assuming their assertion is that the BOE isn't monolithic, they could say that Lynne was in the minority regarding budget approval, or at least regarding any changes she might have suggested. Then it wouldn't be on her, but on the majority who accepted the budget. Meanwhile, they could suggest that she has experience, and might have gained more during her tenure, that would be of benefit in the future, especially if there were change such that non-incumbent wins in the other BOE contests presented a majority of which she was a part.

Ok Laura, or Lynne. The irony is that Lynn touts the arts but has no problem cutting musical instrument repairs for brown and black kids. A vote for Lynne and Laura is a vote for screwing over kids of color.

I wrote this and I assure you I am not Laura or Lynne. Just someone who met Montoya and was REALLY put off by her.

Overall, I have been happy with MCPS since moving here. You people just don't appreciate how good you have it.

Really?

They are paying out 1.3 Million to someone they could have terminated. But clearly, McKnight had some dirt on BOE because they "negotiated" this settlement.

Jane Doe is getting another $300K. (Granted, she DESERVES it and likely more.) But why didn't MCPS/BOE listen to complaints against Beidleman in the first place???

Having read McKnight’s contract, I didn’t see a way the BOE could have terminated her without paying the amount due to her under the severance provisions in the contract. I probably missed something, so how would it work if what you say is true and they could have terminated her without paying her severance?

They paid her more than what was left in her contract. That's what's most infuriating.

The incumbents have shown their value to the system. Time to vote them all out. They have proven themselves to be incompetent for the job.
