Crock-Pot Lovers -- I need HELP!

Anonymous
Hi!

My boyfriend and I recently started traveling around the US. We basically live in hotels, and eating out 2x/day is just not going to happen for us. We've been living off of sandwiches for lunch and dinner, a rotisserie chicken from the grocery store here and there, but it's getting old.

On a recent stop home, a family member gave me a crock-pot... My very first! It's something we can (hopefully) use so get some decent non-sandwich dinners. Just one problem... I have ZERO recipes, and a lot of the ones I searched on google require you to cook something beforehand in a skillet - and that isn't an option for us.

Anyone have some cheap, easy, healthy, delicious crock-pot recipes that I can just throw everything in the crock-pot and something delicious will come out?

Thanks so much!

Slow Cooker Turkey Breast

Ingredients
1 (6 pound) bone-in turkey breast
1 (1 ounce) envelope dry onion soup mix

Directions
Rinse the turkey breast and pat dry. Cut off any excess skin, but leave the skin covering the breast. Rub onion soup mix all over outside of the turkey and under the skin. Place in a slow cooker. Cover, and cook on High for 1 hour, then set to Low, and cook for 7 hours.

Buy yourself a rice cooker from CVS and you can have something to serve this and the turkey recipe over.

Crock Pot Chicken Cacciatore

6 skinless, boneless chicken thighs
1 (28 ounce) jar spaghetti sauce
2 green bell pepper, seeded and cubed
8 ounces fresh mushrooms, sliced
1 onion, finely diced
2 tablespoons minced garlic
2 tablespoons tomato paste

Put the chicken in the pot. Dump everything else on top. Cook on low 7 to 8 hours.

Browning the thighs in a skillet would give it a bit more flavor, but I'm lazy and never bother. If the recipes you found so far call for that, you can skip it without to much trouble. When in doubt, cook on low for around 8 hours, but start checking it after 6.

I don't really get the crockpot thing. Everything cooked in one is sort of stewy old peoples food. If you want chicken, preheat your oven to 450. pour some melted butter and seasoning over chicken parts and in 40 minutes you have dinner. Meatballs can cook in 30=45 minutes. Beef tenderloin in 40 min.

I've made salmon cooked on a bed of spinach in mine...it's not all "stewy old peoples" food. You can also make dessert, bread, etc.

Cooking in a crock-pot means less electricity being used, less heat production in the kitchen, and it can cook while I'm at work/sleeping and it keeps it warm until I get home/wake up.

She doesn't HAVE an oven. She's traveling and wants to take her crockpot along as an option to eating out all the time whilst on the road.

3-4 boneless chicken breasts
1/4c olive oil
1/4c water
1 packet of taco seasoning (I use low sodium)
1 package of pico de gallo

Sprinkle the taco seasoning on the bottom of the crockpot, lay chicken on top, dump pico de gallo over chicken, pour olive oil and water on top. Done.

Cook on low for about six hours, longer if frozen. I usually shred the chicken after about 5.5 hours and let it cook for another half hour.

Most delicious chicken tacos ever.

We have a new nomination for memorable DCUMisms! And by the way, no one besides your great grandmother would cook beef tenderloin in a 450 degree oven for 40 minutes.

40 minutes at 450?! I hope you meant 350 degrees!

Place pork chops and a bottle of barbecue sauce in crock pot, cook on low 6 hours, I like to serve this over rice but not necessary. You can use bone in or boneless chops

I do this but with a pork tenderloin, then I pull it apart to make pulled pork sandwiches. YUM!

OP, I posted the turkey recipe but just want to add that I'm concerned about food safety for you . . . not sure about the cleanliness factor in a motel room? Anyway, hope you have fun and interesting travels!

My go to for the crockpot is kind alike pot roast but with chicken. Cut up veggies (carrots, potatoes, onions, celery) and put it on the bottom of the crock pot. Add chicken broth (I always use low sodium canned stuff) and maybe 1/4 c italian salad dressing then put the chicken on top. Add whatever spices you want (careful with the salt as the broth always has salt) and put it on low for 6-8 hrs. You can even put frozen breasts in there in the AM and it will turn out just fine. I assume you won't use too much of any one thing since it's just the two of you.

Another one I like is pork chops or a small pork tenderloin. I put in drained sauerkraut & applesauce on the bottom, pork on top, season how you like. Again, low for 6-8 hrs.

Handy things to have around for crock pot cooking are cream of chicken/cream of mushroom soup. If all else fails you can put a protein in there with some seasoning and a can of this stuff + a bit of water and let it go. Also, keep some non-stick cooking spray on hand. If you use a creamy soup or have a recipe that has any kind of cheese, it can be a pain in the butt to clean. Or get those disposable crockpot liners and cleanup is a cinch.

If you want some rice, there's always instant stuff you can put in the microwave of your hotel room.
