CORONAVIRUS/COVID-19 NEW MEGA THREAD

People are taking bills out, just when China destroyed some bills because they were afraid they might spread the novel coronavirus?

There is no end to stupidity.

Oh no! I need to get some cash out today to pay some people who only take cash. Ha I gues I’m going to be spraying it all with hand sanitizer. Yuck.

I'm in Canada

Pneumonia and other colds are so common in winter here/in North America. I wish we would test more, like how South Korea is testing. Why aren't we testing more?

I hope we do an Ireland situation too.

We only have 120ish cases (haha right...) and I kept my kids home today due to a child in the school who recently traveled and is now showing symptoms.

Are your kids in elementary? Just curious.

DP - You might want to make sure your emergency fund is in order. A recession and layoffs are likely at this point.

That's not the same as stockpiling cash.

In investment terms stockpiling cash means keeping money in a savings account or money market instead of equities or bonds. I didn't realize you meant LITERAL cash. No, why would you do that?

I am jealous that you have the financial cushion to miss out on all that interest! Seriously.

Also in Canada. I suspect we will see a sharp increase around the first week in April. I hear of so many still thinking it is not a big deal and they are keeping their travel plans for the March break.

Yes, one is, and that's where the sick kid was (grade 3) - exhausted and coughing non stop, couldn't participate in gym, extreme tiredness. My other kid is in junior high but the schools are right beside each other and have about 800 kids in each and many sibling sets between the two.

Seriously? Interest rates are rock bottom and the return on a $3000 bank deposit is the merest of pittances.

We in full disclosure part of it is a $1000 bill which might be less valuable during pandemics (lol...). I usually keep a few hundred in my jacket too. It's come in handy and I'm just used to it now.

I just keep that much cash. It's more valuable for me to have it then to earn the bit of interest. Like paying life insurance is more valuable to me to lose the bit of money every month too.

I really wasn't worried until yesterday morning, when I just woke up feeling like this was serious. I really hope Canada takes a really strong proactive approach.

Jet Blue passenger flew from JFK to Palm Beach and then informed crew when they landed that he had coronavirus. Everyone on the plane was allowed to go and "told to monitor their health for a couple of days."
